The Uiryeong Nam Clan, originating from Uiryeong in South Gyeongsang Province, stands as one of the most influential and esteemed families of the Goryeo dynasty. The family’s ancestry can be traced back to Nam Gyeong, a notable official who served during the Unified Silla and early Goryeo periods. The clan’s legacy was built on important contributions to government, military leadership, and cultural innovation, with their wealth acquired through trade with neighboring kingdoms such as Song China serving to support their efforts. Their financial independence provided them with significant influence in court politics, which in turn helped solidify their position as a noble family.

Because of their ability to produce well-respected military leaders, Confucian scholars, and inventors, the Nams were crucial to the Goryeo Dynasty’s stability and cultural growth. Their ability to skillfully manage their vast wealth while remaining fiercely loyal to the throne allowed them to forge a reputation for advancing the nation’s agenda while simultaneously protecting their own influential position. By actively participating in governance, spearheading innovation, and fostering the arts, the Uiryeong Nam Clan solidified their enduring legacy as a fundamental pillar of Goryeo society.

 

kyungjin was born a bastard, his true lineage carefully concealed by his family to avoid exposing the head’s philandering ways. the shame surrounding his birth led to his rejection by the family elders, with the sole exception of his grandmother, the only advocate he had. his mother, a former noblewoman, had fallen from grace when her family was demoted due to the head’s corruption. this disgrace only deepened the family’s determination to hide kyungjin’s true identity, initially planning to cast him away to live out his days in obscurity.

however, his father who was swayed by his mother’s pleas, chose to keep kyungjin within the immediate family, presenting him as his youngest legitimate son. although his grandmother’s favor offered him a degree of protection, stemming from her status as the family’s most respected member, it proved insufficient to provide complete shielding from the dangers that surrounded him. behind her back, many family members treated him with contempt, forcing kyungjin to navigate a precarious existence shadowed by the stigma of his origins.

the hardships and shame he endured growing up became a driving force behind his decision to become a soldier. when whispers of his illegitimacy began to surface, no one dared to directly confront the head of the family, nam kyunghan, knowing the consequences of questioning his honor. instead, kyungjin bore the weight of the rumors and ridicule alone.

 

refusing to follow the scholarly path, one he knew would only invite further scorn from the elitist circles, kyungjin enlisted in the military. there, he found a space where his merit, not his birth, could define him. through sheer grit and determination, he clawed his way up the ranks, shedding sweat and blood to prove himself. his perseverance and sharp mind did not go unnoticed, and he quickly rose to prominence, earning respect through his dedication and undeniable skill.

through the lives he changed for better or worse and the enemies he vanquished, kyungjin grew into a strong yet compassionate leader. in his youth, he often saw himself as a victim, blaming others for his hardships and believing his circumstances would never change. but as he matured, his perspective shifted. over time, he let go of self-pity, embracing growth and shaping himself into the man he had always aspired to be.
