Chen (Kim Jong Dae) is originally from District 08 but after suffering pain both physically and emotionally by his new stepmother while his father did nothing to help, Chen ran away at an early age to District 09. Nobody knew how it was possible for such a young boy to survive that long walk to the other district. Not even the Capitol knew he ran away from home. This was when he started to believe in fantasies than realities. Fantasies were so happy, bright and cheerful. It makes you feel happy too. While realities are glum, boring and cliche. Always the same. After escaping to District 09 during the winter, he seeks shelter in an old couple's cozy house. He wrapped himself with his blankets, tears rapidly burning the corners of his eyes. When it came the morning, the old couple found the weary, tired boy and raised him as their own child.
 
Just like every other human being, Chen has weaknesses that he developed during his childhood. Ehem, I mean, ruined childhood. Chen has is very sensitive. He will cry almost about everything, unfinished homework, broken pencil, hurt friend. B ut that's just what makes him responsible about himself. Other than that, he does not have much a chance to win the Hunger Games since he's not that speedy or strong (he barely has muscles). He's just the complete opposite of all the requirements of winning the Games. Lastly, he will easily starve.
