fēngyùn (風韻 / 风韵) - “wind sound”; (a woman’s) charm; personal charm, graceful bearing. gagung - “bare branches”; this word is used to talk about men who have little chance to get married or start families due to China’s one-child policy and its results: an excess of marriageable males as compared to females. gǒngshǒu (拱手) - cupping one hand in the other in front of one’s chest to express respect. guānxì (關係 / 关系) - In traditional Chinese society, you would build up good “guanxi” by giving gifts to people, taking them to dinner, or doing them a favor, but you can also use up your “guanxi” by asking for a favour to be repaid; a form of social karma. jiànwài (見外 / 见外) - to regard (oneself) as an outsider. jiěyù (解獄 / 解狱) - to break into jail in order to rescue a prisoner. kàopǔ (靠譜 / 靠谱) - a person who is reasonable and reliable. koro - the belief that one’s is shrinking and will eventually disappear. lǎotóng (老同) – “old-same”; a form of eternal friendship between “heart sisters” – two women who were closer than husband and wife. luo suo - someone who talks and talks your ear off about nothing, nonsense etc. máfán (麻煩 / 麻烦) - trouble, troublesome; trouble relating to government bureaucracy. po guan po shuai - “smash a jar which already cracked”; describes an attitude toward minor failure; When you “Po guan po shuai”, you allow something to become worse, or even make it worse yourself, as a fatalistic reaction towards the failure. qiǎng jìngtóu (搶鏡頭 / 抢镜头) - when referring to a photographer, it means a fight to get in a better position to take a picture; when not referring to a photographer, but to a person in general, it means someone who steals the spotlight. rènào (熱鬧 / 热闹) - lively, festive, happy, and noisy. shānzhài (山寨) - imitation and pirated brands and goods, particularly electronics. shěnměi píláo (審美疲勞 / 审美疲劳) - aesthetically fatigued; seeing so much beauty that one does not appreciate it anymore, especially if that beauty happens to be one’s lover. shīdú (失獨 / 失独) - parents who lost their only child but are too old to have another one.
