backstory
For as long as Yuri could remember, her life had always been about one thing – work. Her childhood of naivety and carefree innocence was cut terribly short, the harsh reality hitting her at a tender age of nine. She could never forget the moment her father had walked out on them, cursing at her mother with words her young mind couldn’t comprehend. Her six-year-old brother had wailed throughout the night in her arms, but Yuri never shed a single tear. She had seen the cracks in her parents’ relationship long before the breaking point. She may have been clueless towards the actual circumstances of their heated arguments, but Yuri knew, intuitively, that they were connected to the noises she had heard emitting from her mother’s room. Not once, but throughout the week whenever her father wasn’t home. The low male voices she fought to recognize, the insistent thudding against the wall, and the sound of the bed creaking under an unfamiliar strain. All of it was wrong. And when she was old enough to fully realize the indecencies happening behind locked doors, Yuri wished for blissful ignorance.
Her father had been their only source of income. His sudden absence, combined with her mother’s incomparable materialism, pushed the family dangerously close the brink of poverty. For a few years, they relied on the pity of her mother’s ever-changing boyfriends, the names of whom Yuri had never bothered to remember. She despised their dependence on fleeting interludes of affection, hating her mother even more because of it. As soon as she turned thirteen, she lied about her age and got a part-time job at a nearby convenience store. She didn’t make very much, but it was enough for her school supplies and second-hand textbooks. She’d rather die than to ask one of her mother’s boy toys for money. Throughout her teens, she managed to juggle two salaries along with her school work. It was far from ideal but she coped with it, believing that this was just how life was. A quarter of her pay always went to her mother, as if desperately hoping she would stop selling herself out to old, debauched men. Much to Yuri’s disappointment, her mother simply smoked, drank and gambled everything away. To be honest though, she wasn’t all that surprised.
On her nineteenth birthday, Yuri was gone. She packed what little belonged to her and strolled out the front door without any regrets, leaving behind a hastily scrawled note with her new phone number for her brother. Yuri was determined to leave everything, yet nothing, behind. She had enough saved by then to rent out a small, modest apartment on the outskirts of town. For the next year and a half, she bounced from job to job, doing whatever came her way. One fateful morning, she caught a glimpse of an ad in a local newspaper. Something called ‘The Circus of Dreams’ was hiring a new cleaner, offering quite a decent salary as well as a place to stay. Yuri immediately jumped at the opportunity, knowing that this would be the only way she could put her brother through university. He had always been the smart one, and if there was any hope left in this family at all, it would lie in his hands. Yuri was going to make damn sure her younger brother didn’t end up like their mother. Or, more importantly, like her.
PERSONALITY
What you see is what you get when it comes to Yuri. She is hot-headed and straightforward to a fault, not afraid to speak her mind even if it offends. Above all, Yuri values independence and strength. She strives to prove herself to the world, as if it could somehow compensate for her parents’ negligence. She wants to believe that she never needed them. As a matter of fact, she doesn’t need anyone at all. She is determined to overcome every challenge by herself, never seeking for help nor accepting anyone's assistance. She goes about her life with an unwavering willpower that can be awe inspiring, even intimidating to others. She refuses to show any sign of weakness, even to those who manage to get close to her. Perhaps it’s her innate distrust of human sincerity that makes her particularly cynical. In her world, love and faith are merely forms of manipulation, illusions of happiness that can only exist in dreams.

I apologize in advance if it takes me forever to reply. I'm probably just busy with school if I pull a sudden disappearing act. Either that, or I completely lost my muse for some inexplicable reason. Motivation wears out and leaves me hanging sometimes but I'll be back.
