About Me
Fujiwara Katsuo's childhood was ordinary, except for the fact that his father was a part of an activist group that opposed the government, including the Battle Royale program. Viewing the whole organization as a mere threat, the members were either killed or kidnapped, and Katsuo's father was killed in front of his eyes when he was a 6th grade student. Angered after he soon learned what happened, he opposed the government as well, swearing revenge to them in order to avenge his father's death. His mother tried to get him into a prestigious school, but due to their lack of money, he ended up going to a government school, increasing his chances of joining the ed-up program.
Earphones plugged into his ears, Katsuo leaned back on his seat comfortably and put his iPod on shuffle, playing random songs on his song list. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath; soothing music played on his ears as he felt the bus accelerate. That day was supposed to be a study trip to a place quite far away from his school, and he could not really remember the place's name because he did not pay attention. He nearly fell asleep, awakened by a tap on his shoulders. He opened his eyes slowly and bobbed his head, showing that he was listening.
"Look," his friend said, pointing at the window nervously. "Isn't it weird that those soldiers are here?"
He was right - Katsuo saw a group of soldiers approximately every 200 metres at the edge of the road. They looked at the bus and took a glimpse on his and his friend's face, as if they have been expecting the bus. "This doesn't look good," his friend added as the bus entered a tunnel. Being seated on one of the front seats, Katsuo felt the darkness first. Still, those soldiers were seen at the edges of the way. Taking another deep breath, he decided to let it slide. Maybe there was something they had to check on.
But then the bus stopped abruptly, and the fifteen-year-old boy nearly fell from his seat. The door opened, and a few people boarded the bus. Katsuo noticed that they were wearing similar masks. He then turned to see the driver, who was also wearing the same mask. The next breath he took, he found that the air he was breathing smelled funny.
And he passed out.
