Peter. Hey. It's been a while since you left. I've been doing okay, I guess. I met up with a group of people. They remind me of my students, in a way. I just wish there was some way for you to be here with me. There isn't a day where I don't think about you and your stupid jokes, and your stupid laugh, and - I just wish you were here with me. And I don't want any of that, "here with me in my heart" crap, I mean here with me now, so I wouldn't have to write this. But, as I've come to figure out over and over, life , and we don't get want we want.
And Kate. Don't think I've forgotten about you, angel. You know, it would've been your birthday a couple of days ago. You would have been seven years old, can you believe that? You were growing into such a big and beautiful girl. And don't think I forgot about your present. You would have loved it. I still have it with me in my backpack. It reminds me of you. It reminds me of your smile, and your tiny shoes, and the ways your eyes would light up whenever one of us came home from work... You were the light of my life, Kate, and... sorry. I don't want to get all mushy on you guys. Just say hi to Daddy for me, alright?
So, I don't think I'll be joining you guys for a while. I have people to take care of. I guess they're my children, or whatever. Don't worry Kate, you're still Mommy's favourite. I think somebody just dropped something, so I probably have to go now. I just want the both of you to know... I love you. And I miss you both. Raise some hell while I'm still here, alright?
Love,
Michelle/Mommy.

Back story:
Michelle had been interested in the idea of psychology and sociology ever since she was a teenager. At first she wanted to be a social worker, but she ultimately decided to become a teacher, wanting to be able to educate others, even if they were rude seventh graders.
She was happily married to Peter, who she met in her last year of high school. He was already in university, and she was 18, but her friends thought their relationship was "cute". He proposed to her when she was 20, and of course, she said yes. They were married in 7 months, and she later gave birth to their baby, Kate, when she was 23. Michelle was satisfied with life. Her job was good and she had a family now - but of course, that didn't last. This isn't a fairy tale.
She was teaching when the zombie outbreak began. The lockdown bell went off and the students went about the regular procedure - they hide in the corner of the room. They chatted amongst themselves as if the lockdown was just a test, but Michelle knew something was wrong. There wasn't a scheduled lockdown today. Then she heard the screaming from just two doors down, Mr. Richard's grade 9 class. At that point, she knew this was real, as if the zombie busting down the door didn't give her enough of a clue. She watched students die, no, get eaten, and their blood was splattered all over her clothes. It was like something out of a video game. Michelle got out of the school as quickly as she could, only to be met with even more zombies outside of the school.
But that didn't matter to her at the time. She was more concerned with finding her family, and most importantly, Kate. She called Peter 3 times, and he didn't pick up the phone. So she drove back home, driving over zombies, until she reached the driveway. She opened the door to find a walker feasting on the stomach of her husband, and it made her sick. She grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and stabbed the zombie repeatedly, until it stopped moving. Then her husband stopped moving. She heard a whimper from behind the kitchen counter, where she found Kate, shaken, but safe.
Michelle took Kate into the car and they drove as far away as they could. Kate kept asking questions about the walkers and her father, but Michelle thought it would be best to just keep this all to herself, at least until she could figure this all out. Then the gas ran out. And right in the middle of a walker hoard, too. She took Kate's hand in hers and they ran outside, trying to get through the hoard. Michelle heard Kate scream, so she picked her up in her arms and kept running. She just ran and ran, until they were clear of the walkers. Then Michelle noticed something: Kate wasn't moving. She moved her hand from the back of Kate's head, and it was wet with blood.
No. One of the walkers must have done something to her. No, no, no. Michelle carefully set Kate down on the ground, and she could hear Kate whimpering in pain. She was clearly in pain. Michelle still remembers the last word her daughter said to her that day: "M... m-mommy..." then she stopped breathing. It was as if everything she loved and cared for was just gone, all in the matter of a day.
At first, she didn't know where to go. She walked around for days and days. Then she stumbled upon the safe house. It was filled with weapons and supplies, and it was empty. Good. Now she could start training to kill these walkers, and she would start taking in other families so that they wouldn't end up like her: alone.
