Born the only child of the late Lord Commander Ji Min Seo and his wife, Lady Hwang Yun Jung, Chang Wook was a boy destined for great things. However, after his father's assassination, and his mother's subsequent death by illness, he became a symbol of misfortune and death to the people of the nation. He wasn't to be looked upon with favor, though he was only a toddler bearing the black clothes of mourning.

Paying no heed to the taboo that came along with Chang Wook, the new Lord Commander adopted him into his childless family and there, he was raised with all the love and care that a child could hope to have received. However, the bad luck that followed him did not end. On his fourteenth birthday, his adoptive parents were murdered by the same assassins that killed his birth father-the leaders of the Heuksa Chorong. The succeeding Lord Commander was not as compassionate as the one before and shipped him off immediately to train as a soldier under the Emperor's Star Guard.

More than a decade later, Ji Chang Wook had risen to the position of Sword General, and he vowed to get revenge on those that destroyed his family.
