She didn't know what was going on, she didn't understand, couldn't understand. She saw her mother crying, she saw the tears in her eyes as well as fear and she only cried because her mother was. She was swiftly scooped out of her bed, blanket and all and hurried out of the room, down the stairs and outside into the night. Her mother was breathing heavy, running into the forest, dodging through trees as she tried to calm her crying three year old, cooing her and telling her it was going to be alright, to hush and be quiet. Sumin listened, calming to shaky breaths as leaves brushed past her face. She remembers her mother looking over her shoulder and how she tried to look too but her face was quickly covered by the blanket. She almost started crying again, not wanting her mother's face to be hidden from her but her mother quickly calmed her. After a while her mother stopped, exhausted from running and breathing heavy, she set Sumin down. The toddler remembered shivering, feeling the cold mud ooze between her toes. She held her arms out to her mother to be held again but was rejected. Instead her mother wrapped her in a hug and started crying again making Sumin start up in tears once more; cupping her daughter's cheeks, brushing the hair away from the little girl's eyes she told her she loved her, so did daddy, that she was the treasure of their lives and they loved her with their whole beings. She told her not to cry, to be as quiet as possible and keep walking. Adjusting the blanket, she wrapped it tight around the little girl, kissed her then turned her around and told her to walk, and not to stop until mommy found her.
Sumin did just that. She kept walking and walking, losing her blanket along the way, her sense of direction, as well as her promise to keep quiet. After the sun was about to set on the first night after the incident, she tried to find her way back, calling out for her mother. She had started crying when her mother didn't find her after the sun rose, but she never gave up hope not even in the rain, the heat, the dark, not until the third night. Sumin had wandered near a young man's house located in the woods. In the middle of the night he was awakened by the sounds of a child calling out for her mother.
"Eomma! Eo-Eom-" The girl was stunned, suddenly silenced by the blinding brightness of a flashlight on her. She flinched and blinked as the flashlight was lowered from her face, blinking cautiously at the figure behind it. She could smell it was a werewolf, halfblood. Family, she immediately thought. The man who found her was Dr. Jang. He found her, three years old, alone, covered in dirt and barefoot, walking through the forest. He saw the tears stains on the little girl's cheeks, her crusty nose, red eyes and dry lips. He saw how she lost her hope for her mother the same moment she found some in him. Sumin remembers the first thing he ever said to her as he kneeled down, warmth radiating from him as he smiled. "You've got some dirty feet there little one. Let's go get you cleaned up." She had looked down at her feet, blinking a few times when she realized how truly dirty her feet were, finding it funny for some reason, she couldn't resist the tiniest laugh that escaped her as she looked up again. With that, he lifted her off her weary little feet, took her home and cleaned her up.
He had her call him Dr. Jang, not father, but he was as good as any father and Sumin loved him just as much. He made sure she had clothes, though she always tried to escape from them when she was little, he made sure she was fed and healthy, that she was growing well, that her feet got cleaned every night and that she smiled and was happy. He had attempted to raise her to be a half blood, but found it more difficult than he thought, and being a doctor he couldn't spend as much time with her as he wanted and needed to be able to teach her. He was just glad she had finally kept her clothes on, although he gave up on the shoes. He eventually realized she was perfect how she was. She was a full blooded werewolf and she was happy that way, happy chasing after rabbits and squirrels, getting dirty and getting into mischief. He resolved that she could decide if she wanted to integrate herself in with society when she was older, or stay the wild child she was born as.
To this day, Sumin still hates shoes, she refuses to wear them. Bare feet may be reminiscent of the worst time she experienced in her life, but it also represented hope and freedom. When her feet were free, she could go wherever, walk wherever and get as dirty as possible but still have hope that somewhere she could rest her weary feet and clean them, wash away all the dirt and start on a path again.
