the three things em sullivan craves most in life but they also happen to be the least attainable. perhaps it’s because of her low paying job as a barista. perhaps it’s envy of the kids (and sometimes she questions herself because she’s actually envious of a kid) who come strolling into the coffee shop, dressed in a simple looking outfit worth more than her and her family’s entire life savings (and maybe her great-grandparents' too), holding onto their parents’ hands and laughing and smiling as they pick out some of the most expensive things on the menu. perhaps she’s not really envious of the kids’ carefree attitudes, the way they so easily toss away their parents’ money, the fact that they’ll never have calloused hands from doing hard labor work. perhaps she’s envious of their childhood, the childhood she could-would-never have, because it’s right in front of her, close enough to touch but alwaysalwaysalways dancing away from her grasp. but it most definitely is because she’s poor, her family’s poor, and the government’s made sure of the fact that the poor get poorer and the rich get richer and it’s not fair, but she’s come to realize at a young age that nothing is ever fair and she might as well just keep dreaming - dreaming of wealth that’s all hers, dreaming of the soulmate she’ll age with and be one step closer to escaping the hell of poverty.

so she keeps dreaming, as she takes orders from well-dressed patrons who look at her with pity-condescension-indifference, as she cleans the counters and tabletops, as she looks at the customers who stand out from the rest of the crowd (because the rich are so much better than the poor, and you could tell just by their posture - tall, straight, confident, with the touch of embarrassment from looking so different from everyone else) and she swears to herself that she’ll make it happen and it’ll be a happily ever after. except it’s not that simple. it never is.

em’s a charming little thing, eager to please and flirting whenever she deems useful because experience has taught her that a little smile and personable manners result in tips and returning customers. on occasions, and/or with extended observation of her behavior, she seems over-eager and rather manipulative. she’s not the brightest, but she has a sharp eye and uses that to her advantage. she’s generally a polite and courteous person, but give her an opening, and she’ll seize it. after all, she has her eye on the upper classes. just because it's deemed impossible doesn't mean she won't try. 

[ooc: basically, she’s nice n chill until there’s a chance she can climb the social ladder. a bit like sasha braus and her love for food only a bit more extreme. pls ignore this bit, it’s more for my own use than anything orz]
