Background: born to a family of con artist, but other than that, nothing exciting in his life

Lies upon lies was what was taught to a young Kim Jongwoon when he was able to understand the syllables spilling from his parent’s mouth. It wasn’t unusual for him to find out his parents spared him the truth or told an exaggerated tale because his parents wanted to show him that the world isn’t just the painted scenes on covers. He was taught at just the age of four to go up strangers, asking and begging for food or just take advantage of his childlike innocence for the stranger to fall for the trap. Growing up he made trips with his father to hustle a groups of people, ranging from money to promises of free labor. He even learned how to pick pocket using the Seven Bell method, used his ‘charms’ to get anyone to believe his words knowing very well how to get to people. His facial features always fit the situation at hand – an actor on a stage. Most kids were suspicious of him but didn’t find Jongwoon all that threatening. They invited him to play, and he felt like a normal kid… it’s just that he doesn’t have friends, instead they were there for his benefits. He was usually happy, felt a bit of warmth (just not enough to actually feel the heat). Although the family were con-artist.

Every day he would get up early to chop down trees, testing his strength. He’ll be outside timing his self on his speed and would work through the sun and blisters on his hands. It kept his mind off the cold atmosphere around the house but at times he’ll play around just above the branches. The forest has always been his home, away from the constant trickery and deception from his parents’ teachings. He’ll even wonder if those words ‘I love you’ were even remotely true. From the outside they were the all caring family, but Jongwoon knew there were secrets behind those smiles, using lies to cover up the sadness. This was the way they coped, and soon he was using the same tactic. Up in the trees, he would travel silently, always keen to watch curiously over passing animals or the people; to find the little things people do when they are about to lie or just know exactly what they are doing. Finding the right body language can do wonders when searching for secrets among the façade.

Age 8, his mother gave birth to his younger brother, Jongjin, and to say the least, Jongwoon was attached to him. His parents tried to pressure Jongjin into their acts but he would always take him away to play with toys or hang out with the other children. With all his efforts, Jongin was still able to pickpocket victims, but he wasn’t as skilled as the rest of the family. The older they grew, the closer they became. Smiles and teases would be exchanged with the two, always finding a laugh every once in a while. For once, Jongwoon felt warm. All these games lasted until he turned the age of 16 as he was forced to locate to another part of the district. For five years he was gone, only surviving on his brother’s letters until they stopped suddenly. The letters stop just before his 19th birthday, and from that time on, Jongwoon felt extremely cold. He felt betrayed and his parents seem to make up stories every time he would ask for answers. He settled with the fact (given by some guard) that Jongjin had left, not even bothered to say goodbye to his older brother. His personality changed from warm hearted to a more sarcastic, threateningly friendly, cocky, falsely optimist, and pathological liar. To him, people were just there for the fun and excitement, not for trust or needs.

When the games came to be, he actually volunteered when he realized a ten year old boy would participate in the games. He didn’t know what came over him when his voice spoke out. It was just logical for him to be in it considering his age (29yrs old); he didn’t have much to lose.
