College never called Genie's name, not in any of the school fieldtrips to campuses, not when her father droned on and on about what kind of job a degree could get her, and definitely not now as she set up her picnic under the shade of the towering big leaf maple tree. Genie was crouched on the ground, spreading out the corners of a thin, yellow and white striped quilt, over the lush grass covered ground. Her thick veil of midnight strands fell over her shoulders and into her face as she moved around, the golden "baby" necklace around her neck dangled in the air, and she pulled the hem of her white tank top over the belt loops of her denim shorts as the fabric started to rise above her hips and show more of her golden mahogany skin. Before Genie was a simple spread of food she had just gotten from Panera Bread, the brown paper bag was ripped and flattened to be used a placemat for her can of Coca Cola, caesar chicken salad, a savory cup of chicken and rice soup, and a warm chocolate chip cookie Genie couldn't wait to get a taste of. Satisfied, she finally laid down on the quilt, her body twisting against the cover to get comfy as she started to happily poke and prod at her salad with a fork. She took a bite before she looked up from her food, her doe eyes relaxed as she looked at the green campus grounds around her. This was a routine for Genie, on Fridays while the sun was still high she would have her own picnic on the university grounds, and it was always when classes happened to be in session so no one could disturb her through the loud hustle and bustle of students. If she told anyone the places she was able to go without a student badge, they would be surprised, so she made the most of her time while she was there. Genie's wispy lashes closed as she sighed a gentle breath through her nose, her skin grew goosebumps when the speckles of sunlight peeked through the empty spaces between the leaves and brushed against her skin. There was no other peace like this.
