The two classes;

NOT (Normally Overcome Target) class at DWMA and learn to control their powers in order to overcome their difficulties to have a normal life. NOT students are non combat ready, they do not do missions or try to achive the School's goal, they are simple at DWMA to learn how to control their powers and be able to function in the human world.  Most NOT students do have a partner; those partners tend to be their partner until they graduate and move back to the human world. NOT students can transfer into the EAT class but only after they take a mission on and pass it. 

EAT (Especially Advanced Talent) the battle-oriented class Who Learn Through Experience And thrive to achieve the school’s goal and create a death scythe. EAT students make up only 20% of the student body. EAT students partner for life -- normally, there are a few cases that are vull of this rule. All EAT students must take missions and tasks from DEATH or a staff member, they will be judged on how they perform during the mission and will be placed in rank afterwards. Rank determines how strong the pairing is, this determines how powerful the person or pairing is. EAT class also partakes in special events and test that NOT class do not.

• one star and two star ranking are what most students recieve 
• three stars are for staff and teachers; students rarely rank this high.

key school rules; 

• If two meisters are dueling on school grounds, at least one of the faculty members must be present to witness.
•  Taking souls not on Shinigami's List is forbidden.
•  Taking too many souls is forbidden.
•  In the event of an emergency, students are allowed to walk into the Death Room without permission

key terms;

Shinigami's List is a list available formerly to The Eight Warlords and, currently, to the Death Weapon Meister Academy's forces. It lists the names of all of the individuals who are allowed to be executed and are permitted by Death to have their souls consumed by Demon Weapons. People who make the list range from criminals to individuals even trying to be a kishin. Those on the list get added into a "quest" on the Mission Board, in which select meister/weapons, depending on their rank, are able to participate in. It should be noted that individuals who are human to any extent can make the list.

Soul Resonance is a special technique used by Meisters and Weapons, in which, they synchronize their Souls' wavelength. By doing so, they can release highly powerful techniques and, more often than not, change the tide of a battle.Resonating Souls is the foundation of Meister and Weapon relationships. Resonation is the act of linking Soul Wavelengths.
 

• Soul Wavelength of one's soul. It is the part of the soul which is invisible to both the eye and that of Soul Perception visually, though it can be sensed.  Soul Perception practitioner can actually 'read' a soul and make accurate judgments about the person's characteristics, personality and Soul Wavelength.
• Types of wavelength: Anti-Demon, Healing, Madness and Murderous.

Madness itself refers to the spectrum of behaviors characterized by certain abnormal mental or behavioral patterns. Madness also takes the form of a force, able to influence an individual in a plethora of ways mentally or even physically.

• The most powerful sort of madness, this is emitted from the Wavelength and of that of a Great Old One. Their pressence alone plunges men into the very depths of Madness. All beings except the Great Old Ones can fall sway to any of these madness types : Power, Knowledge, Fear, Order, Anger.
• Madness can also emit from an individual with a Madness Wavelength. Madness emitted from individuals can also be resisted and/or certain individuals can even have immunity.
