There's something people need to understand about music and KPOP in general and that is that it's not all about who sings the best.
I mean, in theory, it's supposed to be. But we know that is not the case, especially with KPOP. It's simply a plus if you get a lot of great singers within a group.
With the new S.M. The Ballad music video for Breath, a lot of people were hating on Krystal and Jonghyun. Let me explain to you why I believe Krystal and Jonghyun were chosen over Luna and Onew.
First of all, Jonghyun has a very distinguied voice. Hearing his voice, you automatically know its him even if you aren't a Shawol. Onew, I believe is a bit better of singer then Jonghyun, but his voice isn't quite as unique. Now, yes, Onew's voice is pretty distinguished, but in SHINee, Jonghyun has the most pronounced voice.
I've been hearing a lot of crap like 'Krystal can't even sing' so why did they put her in S.M. The Ballad. Ha! I scoff at you. Krystal can sing. She can sing very well in fact. It's true that Luna is best vocalist in f(x), but again... same thing here, Krystal has a more unique voice. Krystal's voice is not boring. I'm sorry, but we all know Luna's voice is not all that popular even though she can sing pretty well.
You already have Taeyeon, who is an excellent singer but lacks power and uniqueness. I know people have been saying recently that she is gaining more power in her performances... but honestly the reason I'm not a fan of Taeyeon's songs is because she still lacks a lot of power even though her technique is great. So, in all honesty I find her performances boring even when she pulls of high notes.
My favorite songs aren't exactly those slower or alluring songs. I like fun songs even though they don't let vocal prowess show as much.
The only question that I would ask S.M is why they put Chen in. Don't get me wrong, Chen is probably the best vocalist in EXO (I honestly am not sure between him, Kyungsoo, and Baekhyun), but they already put Changmin in there. Having two vocalists who have a particulary high register just... isn't right. I think Kyungsoo would have been a better choice, he has a really clean voice and his low tone is beautiful. Although I suppose it makes it more balanced having males with naturally high voices, but then I ask why they chose Jonghyun for the korean vers..
I could ask why they put Taeyeon in there as I don't think she has a particularly interesting voice, but I think it would be weird without Taeyeon. Most know her voice well simply because she is the best vocalist in the popular band SNSD.
I was most excited to see Krystal and Changmin sing together. I'm a fan of them both. A lot of people say that their version (japanese vers) was the most disappointing and that Krystal ruined the song. On the contrary, I still stand behind my stance that korean version was the most disapointng as I was expecting something more from Taeyeon. It really sounds like I hate Taeyeon, when I infact really like her.. it's just she's not on the top of my list for favorite female vocalists ewe;. Knowing she can sing so well, I expected more from her. Where as Krystal, although not the best vocalist, did suprise me in that she did more than I thought capable of her.
Another reason why I think the Korean vers was out of place was because both of the males in the other versions can sing very high, where as Jonghyun has entirely different type of voice making the song seem to different.
I have no complaints about Zhang Liyin, she did expectedly well, as always.
The video itself was particularly well done. I loved seeing Changmin act so well. And the white video for the singers was not distracting. I thought it was put together very nicely.
