So What is the Problem?

I mean, I can understand that a roleplay may not be active, or that the majority of the roleplays may have the same theme behind them, but there really is no reason to why someone cannot find at least one roleplay to roleplay in. There is no real excuse unless you have lost your time or passion for the whole thing in general. Even so, I have taken the time to discuss a few of the problems I and others may have on this site.

Inactivity, boring roleplays and/or people, common themes, etc.

Inactivity

So, I've noticed the inactivity in roleplays, and though I'm not saying it's every roleplay, I'm not saying it's not just a couple of roleplays either. Inactivity is one of the things I've seen people complain about, and some even ignore roleplays because of how dead it is, how many (inactive) people are there, and maybe a few other things, and I find them all a bit ridiculous.

A roleplay is only as active as you really want it to be or as active as you make it. You can only take out what you give in, so if you really want an active roleplay, help to make the roleplay active. A few ways you can do so are by going outside of walls and roleplaying in rooms, advertising for the roleplay since you do that when you want a friend to join, changing things about your characters and/or writing style, checking out newer roleplays, and maybe more. It’s a little amusing just how little people really have to do, but are too lazy to carry out.

"Boredom"

If you’re bored in an rp because nobody talks to you and you haven’t said a word to people, say something besides "I'm bored"! Make it known that you want to roleplay and ask other people. You can’t expect everyone to flock to your wall and beg for a chance to exchange lines and phrases. If you are asking, but no one is responding or even giving a damn, tell an admin that you have that problem or get one of your friends to join. Even if the admin doesn’t bother with you, there are plenty of other roleplays that could use another roleplayer, and there is even inbox roleplaying. Don’t just sit there like you don’t have any options.

Common Themes

This one is an easy fix. You all clearly have a brain and two hands, why not use them and create a roleplay that is different from its relatives? It’s a struggle trying to find one that suits your needs, but you know what? You can always make one. And that’s not so difficult a task either.

If you’re in search of something different, try basing it off of a book that has not had the chance to be the foundation of a roleplay’s theme. In fact, base it off of anything you may enjoy. Whether it is a book, a movie, a video game, a show, a flipping picture, or any unique idea that may stem from that cranium of yours. Think outside (or inside) of the box and go for an idea that isn’t really out there yet. Keep in mind the likes and loves of the general public, but even with a clichéd theme you can make it your own.

Some things to consider:

Not every inactive person has the time and energy to respond to everything that happens on this site. People have homework, jobs, and lives to take care of; they don’t need whining brats that constantly “poke” them because they have nothing better to do with themselves. Patience is always appreciated and returned.

You don't have to be an admin or have an adverisement to advertise.

Only join a roleplay if you are serious about roleplaying there or have the time to. Why waste time if you can’t make time?

When handling inactivities, give people time. After a while, ask them if they really plan on roleplaying in your roleplay and if they happen to say yes, don't expect them to rush into it the next day, continue with another day or two and let them get to it when they get to it. However, if the person shows no sign of improvement after about a week or so, decide what you want done with them and move on, but do not pester people.

Characterization is a cool thing. In reality not everyone is nice, easy-going, and likeable with a "dark secret". Neither are they cold, distant, and rude, but deep down they have a soft side and like to cuddle. Making a character real is probably a hard thing to do, but it isn't impossible. Think of your friends, enemies family members, teachers, associates, and any stranger to you. Do they all sound the same, act the same, and think the same? Unless they are robots, I think not. Creating a characters personality and background are relatively easy, guys. At least try to be different. Hell, make your character be that creepy crackhead that asks people every Friday for cheeseburgers and a sprite. And for god's sake, people, make your characters like human beings (if they are). Not every whisper is heard, not every touch is noticed, not every blow will land you fifteen meters away, not every time you fight you win, not every insult will hurt like the dickens.

Your writing style, whether scipt or para, can piss you off sometimes or bore you. Maybe it's too long and lengthy. Maybe it's too short and choppy; I have some advice: change it up every now and then. Instead of capping it off at two lines, try seventeen; instead of typing one paragraph, type six. You'll never know how much fun something may be until you try it out.

Other than this, I have not much left to say. Do inform me of any typos, mispellings, and grammatical errors. I thank you, to anyone who reads this, if this gets read.

These problems are sooo true. Yet, I'm being quite hypocritical when I say that because I do tend to ignore some characters more than others and have quite slow replies. As for poking, that annoys the living hell out of me and makes me want to commit mass murder. Characterization is the best thing about rping, and I don't get why people don't use this technique to keep them less bored. Its like creating a background of character in a story, then rping is their interactions with people around them. Sorry, I make no sense right now cause #braindead.

These are very useful tips thanks for sharing them! ^^ I think for me I have a hard time, coming up with a 'creative' roleplay idea but I try to make it somewhat unique. Usually it's based off of book series or anime/manga series that I like, or just something random but I think has an interesting plot.

As for the character thing I love coming up with different personalities for my characters ^^ I've never tried a 'badass' or snarky character before, so I experiment with those and see how I do. It gets boring sticking with the same personality over and over again.
