A very long time ago, God called his twelve animals and their friend the cat to a great banquet. To further excite them, he claimed that the first to arrive would be rewarded greatly - they would have the earliest positions in the zodiac. God succeeded in enlivining the banquet, and all the animals were excited.

The rat wanted to be the first, the greatest, more than anyone, so he lied to his best friend, the cat, and told him that the feast was a different day. After the rat promised to rouse his friend the morning of the banquet, the cat fell into a deep sleep and missed the entire thing, therefore being excluded from the zodiac.

The rat, who rode the entirety of the journey on the fat ox's back, was the first member of the zodiac. The others fell behind him - some were lazy and didn't even try to arrive in time at all. That made God angry. His anger escalated to a final point when he heard of the rat's trickery. 

As a result of their greed and mistakes, the Sohmas were cursed. The twelve animals and God would continue to be reborn every few generations, trapped in a weak human body. Then, they will be doomed to a life of isolation - every time they get too close to a member of the opposite , they will transform into their desginated zodiac animal and their obscenity will drive others away. The bearer of a cursed child reacts either with violent negligence or overprotectiveness and their parents often break apart as a repercussion. The members of the zodiac are destined to live a hard life for eternity unless they can break the curse.
