+do root canals hurt?

I had a cavity filling about 2 months ago, and it was really sensitive (still is really sensitive) to heat and cold. It's literally the most intense pain. Anad now the pain won't go away. It's kinda like this lingering burning pain around my tooth, stretching into my jaw line and up to my jaw. I can't go to the dentist for another few days but from what I've been researching root canals is a possibility and y'all know how anxious and panicky i get with teeth and jaws and mouths so ...

No, when you need a root canal, you don't feel any pain in the tooth. Normally.

i know that it's normal for that to happen a few days after
but i'm not sure about a couple months.
sometimes mine are like that and it's been a couple months.
