the village market.
The market is expansive, as everyone in the village gathers every Sunday to buy, sell, and trade with one another. Hollering of old ladies and the whooping laughs of old men fill your ears. One woman quite forcefully tries to get you to buy her watermelons "Best watermelons in the village! Especially compared to Mrs. Xiong's over there!" she leans in close to you, "I heard that she uses chemicals to make them grow faster."
The heart of village gossip, friends and rivals gather to update each other on everything. Mothers brag about their kids, fathers try to drink each other under the table, and the older children run errands. Plates of produce are everywhere, the smell and sound of live animals is in the air, and some old man tries to get you to eat roasted maggots. Is that even healthy? You decided to pass on the maggots and look at the list your family made for you. Where is the rice? You ask yourself.
Admission is free! Make sure you bring money because whether you like it or not, that old man will force you to buy his roasted maggots.
