The click of a turning lock is immediately followed by the release of suctioned air as the window at the farthest end of the room is pushed open just a crack—just enough to let out smoke-laden air. A brief, tired sigh escapes Bora's lips as she settles comfortably on the sill, back resting against the frame while she digs around in her little cross-body bag for her pack of cigarettes and then, after securing a stick between her lips, the always-elusive purple lighter. She eventually finds it, just before her annoyance and a tinge of panic begin to seep into her psyche and take over. Click, click, cl— a small flame ignites, and she uses it to light her cigarette before dropping the piece of plastic back into the purse. Her mind wanders, a million thoughts coming and going like the small plumes of smoke escaping through the window's opening. A soft curse leaves her as a particularly intrusive thought rears its ugly head and she shifts, perching a leg up onto the sill and letting the other idly swing. She takes another drag and watches the figures of other people milling about in the courtyard, enjoying the unusually nice autumn day.
