"Okay, let's see." She said looking over the question. This would have been much easier if he had handed over his homework. "Who is teacher...the teacher for this class?" She asked while rereading the sentence, hoping that it was right. His stoic expression did help make it better for her to study. She knew her friends would have had fits of giggles listening to her speak. "I am a second year student." She continues to read the translation from the page, slowly working through them one by one.
@⁰¹ yoohyeon k. "Technically," Yibo started, moving to take a look at the practice question to get the details right. The sentence was technically right, but it was missing a few things. "You got the structure right. But it should be 'What do you do at school?'" Yibo explained, pointing a finger at the question, at the particular parts she left out. He was calm and collected, not a hint of any emotion whatsoever. "Don't be scared. Practice makes perfect," Yibo encouraged her in a monotonous voice, trying to boost her confidence slightly. "Try another one," he pointed to the next question.
She felt all the knowledge slip out of her brain at once when he pushed the book over to her. "Err..." She blinked a few times looking up at Yibo. She looking down at her textbook, reading the practice questions and trying to translate it in her mind. "What...What you do school?" She asked in English, speaking slowly hoping that her pronunciation was clear. "I think that was right?" She said while switching back to Korean quickly. She felt to self-conscious and nervous.
@⁰¹ yoohyeon k. After receiving that information, Yibo straightened out a little to stretch his spine. "Fine," he sighed out, leaning back, elbows on table. Knowing now that she had some basic knowledge, even if it was, as they say, rusty. "Impressed," Yibo mumbled, his ego swelling slightly. "Let's practice then," he said and gently pushed the girl's textbook towards her. "The first task is on the discussed topic, try it," Yibo nodded his head in the direction of her materials. "Try it, if you still have problem, I'll guide you through it." With the patience of Leo, Yibo rested his chin on a closed fist, watching and waiting for his classmate to start practicing.
@⁰¹ yibo w. She repeated after him slowly trying as she processed it. "Yeah, I remember that much from high school. I can't say my classes taught much since we always were forced to memorize the textbook rather than why." She had straight As in the class but it was embarrassing knowing she couldn't speak the language. "At least you're actually teaching the background and I'm impressed." This was helping her a lot more than copying from the textbook and hoping for the best.
@⁰¹ yoohyeon k. Yibo hummed, turning a page to look for the interrogative sentence headline. "There are more types. Let's start with the easiest. The WH interrogative sentences," Yibo spoke the last part in English with a slight accent, clearing his throat afterwards. "You know the WH elements? What, who, where, when, how, and such?" Yibo aske, glancing the girl's way for the first time to check her reaction, "In these sentences, the elements take the initial position, followed by a verb and then the rest of the sentence."
@⁰¹ yibo w. "Yeah." He said while looking at the words. "I think I can understand that..." She said softly while trying to follow along. "What changes the sentence into an interrogative sentence?" She asked. "Is there a strict placement of what follows like subject, verb, then action? Or...?" She was trying to remember her old English lessons from high school but she was drawing a complete blank with it. She can make baby sentences in English but even that was a struggle.
@⁰¹ yoohyeon k. "'kay," Yibo cleared his throat, pulling his chair closer to the table to be able to show and teach better. He wasn't really a teacher type of a person, but he enjoyed being the one people looked up to and it wouldn't be so satisfying if it was for no reason. "See this formula here?" Yibo asked, pointing the other side of his pen to a basic sentence structure formula demonstrated in the reference book. "Subject plus verb," Yibo read the signs out loud, pointing the pen to them respectfully. "In a declarative sentence, subject always comes first. If you see a phrase without a verb, it's not a proper sentence," Yibo started explaining, thinking it would be better to start with that before going to the easier problem, the tenses.
@⁰¹ yibo w. If she somehow managed to leave as an expert, then he was a genius. "Quick? Okay." She said in disbelief. They might have had two different ideas of what quick meant. "Problem one is how to order the sentence. Problem two is knowing what tense to use." English seemed so backward to her compared to Korean. She enjoyed not thinking about where or not who she was speaking to was higher and lower but outside of that, it made her head hurt.
@⁰¹ yoohyeon k. Yibo scoffed, smirking under his breath. She couldn't have known that this was going to be a quick session with her leaving as an expert. "No. This is going to be quick," Yibo snorted through his nose in his odd way of amusement. He opened his textbook, took the pen between his fingers and started flipping through the pages to find the bookmark where the current homework was at. "Let's start. What's the biggest issue for you?"
@⁰¹ yibo w. She tried her best to be punctual. He was doing this for her as a favor. "I have my textbook." She said while setting the book down and her notes as she took a seat. "I see we're going to be in this for the long haul..." She honestly wasn't expecting his efforts to be this intense. Luckily, she was wide awake for this and had enough time tomorrow where she can study the rest of the materials on her own.
@⁰¹ yoohyeon k. "Wang Yibo," the boy merely bowed his head at the girl in greeting, expression blank and his eyes almost droopy. Pulling a chair out to seat himself down, he was actually slightly impressed the girl was on time. He appreciated that and considered her efforts to be worthy his help so far. "You've got your textbook?" Yibo asked right of the bat, not wasting precious time. His own materials and tools were being spread over the desk in the study room, a pen, a textbook and the source material for their tasks.
@⁰¹ yibo w. Yoohyeon hurried to the study room, double-checking herself to make certain she remembered to bring the materials with her. She knew it was a risk texting a stranger out of the blue and asking for their homework but it seemed to pay off well. She never tried to make herself noticeable while in class since she was usually too exhausted from work to pay attention.
She stepped inside the study room and glanced around until she spotted her classmate, walking over to introduce herself. "I guess this is as good of a time as ever to introduce myself. I'm Kim Yoohyeon."
@⁰¹ yoohyeon k. Yibo let out a sigh as soon as offered to help his English classmate. Taking his backpack and putting his phone away into the pocket of his sweatpants, he didn't care much to change out of his comfortable clothes, and just left his dorm room, heading to the study room. It would be quiet there, he hoped. He strutted down the stairs and walked into the study room, not really sure who to look for since most he could remember was a head over the desk at the back of the class. Shrugging, he took a seat, unpacking the English homework from his backpack for reference.
