At fifteen, Bao Yu was one of 23 students kidnapped from a school bus on its drop off route home. After a week in captivity, the kidnappers resolved to leave with the ransom money after shooting all 23 students. Bao Yu, weakened and in a deterioriating mental state, killed the kidnappers during a panic attack. Her actions allowed the students to escape, but also led to the death of the young woman whose house the kidnappers had used as a base. Left traumatized by the kidnapping causing so many deaths, Bao Yu developed severe paranoia and a distrust of individuals around her. To escape the public attention and the Division, Bao Yu and her parents moved back to her father's hometown, Shenzhen, until Bao Yu was 18. Writing had been her only outlet for years, so when the drafts of her first novel were well received by an illustrious publishing company in America, Bao Yu moved back to Euclid, home of the publishing company's largest office. A writer of only 3 years, Bao Yu has received highly positive reviews from critics, and increasing popularity among adolescents and adult readers. Part of her popularity is due to her use of an alias when writing. Due to her paranoia, she writes under the name "Ban Xi", which she created from the Banshee of Irish folklore. Her author picture contains the image of a woman in a hooded cloak.
