[Warning: Long roleplaying sentiment rant ahead. Based on the various RPs both here in RPR and FB RPs I've had the chance of joining, as well as experiences of friends and other roleplayers that I've asked about regarding this trend.]
So, Canon Roleplaying is a big thing.
One thing I liked so much about roleplay as a form of writing exercise is the fact that you can choose not to go with the canon of the real world and actually experiment with different personalities and be creative about it. You can have two vastly different people from two different groups who might not even be linked to each other, but manage to pair them up after finding even just a remote jump-off point regarding personalities. I’ve even experienced that myself, and that’s what makes it so fun. Yixing can be with Krystal even if she’s Kai’s girlfriend in real life. A Myungsoo-Jia pair exists, Ken becomes the boyfriend of EXID’s Solji even if he had a collab with Hani, and Baekhyun actually ends up with Wendy even when he’s evidently a lovestruck puppy for Taeyeon in the real world.
But one thing I noticed with many BTS roleplayers is that they almost always go for the canon: OTPs, and the expected intergroup ships.
I have yet to encounter a straight/female-prefering BTS roleplayer that was game to just interact with various people. I usually play either Joy or Seulgi in Red Velvet, but when I ask to RP with a V, my thread immediately gets ignored.
Why? Oh, because I am not Irene.
I ask to play with a Jungkook, and I am not even given the time of day.
Why? Because I’m not GFriend’s Eunha.
It was already a of luck that a V approached me after finding out that I played Joy.
And why, you ask? Because apparently, V is also paired up with Joy somehow.
And honestly, it gets tiring after a while. What happened to creativity and making things work? What happened to meeting other characters as simply their characters instead of always binding themselves to the standards of real world?
I guess I’m just being a bit bitter because of all those Jungkooks and Vs who broke my heart and confidence. I am not even asking to be in a relationship with them. I just want to RP with them and befriend them, and yet they treat everybody else - not just my character but other females as well - like they’re second rate simply because they’re not a real-life shippable pair. That’s just low.
Well, if this goes on, I would have to wait for a straight/female-preferring Jimin so my Seulgi can actually have a BTS friend.
And even the good Lord knows that those kinds of Jimins are even rarer than gay Hongbins.
Not even Master Pokeballs can catch that.
