I ONCE WROTE A poem about walking skeletons. i told my teacher that i wished the world could be that way, and she called my mother and told her. but what did she care? she had her own problems to deal with. her marriage was bad, and i was on my own. eat. chew. i wish i could pinpoint the exact moment i began counting calories like the dead of war, mourning each addition as if lamenting on behalf of their families. the moment when the tendrils of darkness began to grip me for seconds, minutes, then hours. the moment when my hands and feet trembled with the burden they had been forced to carry. bones aren't strong. the wind can whistle through them; they can break and shatter and splinter before returning to the ashes of earth. but we do what we must to survive. though sometimes, i can't help but wonder why.

Lily was diagnosed with severe hypoglycemia at the age of ten. she'd been having convulsions and fainting spells since she was five years old. tired of the stress it brang, her parents carried her to doctor, where she received her prognosis. an alcoholic, her father was abusive; he beat her mother and he force-fed lily when her appetite failed her. it got to the point where the sight of all food sickened her; she hid herself away whilst she was at home with excuses of homework and assignments, though that could never truly stop her father when he was on one of his rampages. it brought her old symptoms back, of course, until she too grew tired of it and subjected herself with weary resignation to her fate. above all, she wanted to live. wanted to live until she had become an adult and she would no longer walk like she was trying to disappear, looking as if her back was about to be ed up by bad posture. wanted to live to see her father get what he deserved. wanted to enjoy what she was, even if it was frustrating and made her some sort of freak. yearned for the day her friends would regard her with something other than false pity and cease bestowing empty words of comfort. her desires yielded results. her grades, always mediocre, improved a bit. she managed to move out when she was eighteen; escaping with a black eye and a sprained ankle, but the price for her freedom could have been the loss of an organ - she wouldn't have minded. she had resolutions, she had goals. and there was something breathtaking in that knowledge.
