For millions of years vampires lived in hiding amongst humans. They learned to blend in and claim their prey silently. The humans never suspected a thing until...
Well, while some vampires evolved to be more human by adapting to be able to face sunlight without trouble and others evolved far past others gaining otherworldly powers, others devolved to a more beast-like state. These beasts couldn't be controlled and went on killing rampages. Their thirst for blood isn't ever quenched until they are put to eternal rest.
These beasts made the humans more aware of vampires. Since any vampire could end up devolving they forced all of them onto a large island near the Korean Pennisula. The vampires complied, because they were outnumbered and did think it was best to be kept away from mass popultions of humans should a devolution occur. They made a deal with the humans though. Every month a ship of human sacrifices would be brought to the island. The humans would be rationed out and given to vampires for them to do as they pleased. Half of them were usually killed right then and there, because of the hunger they had to carry with them for a month. They can only survive a month without blood so they were always very axious to get their food. The rest of the humans would live with the vampire they'd been given to. The remaining humans were usually kept alive as a continous supply of blood for whoever they'd been given to. It's common for the vampires to keep humans around as servants and slaves as well, getting as much use out of them as they can. Sometimes they would even be forced to breed like cattle.
Vampires soon grew used to the island and built a large city in the center of it. The island became their own little utopia and they were content with that. From where they stood it seemed like they owned the world even though they are only a small part of it. They were glad they didn't have to hide themselves anymore. The humans on the island however, they are not so glad. The humans are picked at random when they are chosen as sacrifices on the mainland. After one unlucky drawing from a computer in a government database they ended up here. They can't escape the island, because the only boat that ever comes in is there to drop off more 'fresh meat'. The older and the very young are the ones that usually die in 'the feeding' as the humans call it when the vampires kill half of those that get dropped off. The strong healthy teens to those in their early thirtys survive and are branded on their shoulders with the initials of whoever owns them. Humans die on the island every day though, who knows how long they'll last?
