We Live Again
Sacheon's Beginnings
In a time and place long forgotten, there was a flourishing kingdom ruled by King Soo, who was greatly envied by neighboring lands—this vile jealousy turned into a rain of terror that cascaded across King Soo’s beloved kingdom. All he had wanted to do was provide for his people, but instead, he brought pain and suffering unto them. Now, he wanted revenge on the enemy.
With his kingdom under siege, King Soo turned to unlikely means, summoning the council of demons for their strength to turn the tide of this war. They agreed to help on one condition: that King Soo must forfeit his firstborn son in exchange for this power.
For King Soo, his son was his greatest treasure. But in his shortsightedness… King Soo gave up his precious son in exchange for power.
Soon, King Soo’s enemies were defeated but his son’s spirit—angry and vengeful for being sacrificed—haunted these lands and began to amass a following to overthrow the King. The son’s spirit usurped King Soo and banished Soo from the kingdom with his remaining followers.
***
In exile, some of Soo’s followers began to question if forfeiting his son was worth the revenge against neighboring lands. Soo, on the other hand, was still convinced that revenge needed to be exacted: in fact, this was not enough, he needed to continue till peace was restored and his son was resurrected.
Once again, Soo turns to demonic forces and he sacrifices his followers to collect bones—one bone per disciple, collecting enough bones to create a skeleton to resurrect his son with, and put his son’s soul to rest, no matter how much death he caused.
Unbeknownst to Soo, his son was still angry and corrupt from the sacrificial ritual he endured, so when his son awoke, revived in a new body, his son killed Soo. The son took revenge, taking Soo’s body to the river where the former king disposed of his sacrifices, and the son revived every slain soul with every last bit of Soo’s body.
The son is now known as the Great Necromancer, this river and surrounding village is called Sacheon (“Dead River”) to this day, and the people revived from it are known as the necromancer’s army.
The Birth of Deadmen
The Great Necromancer gained an army of the living dead when he revived the poor souls slain by King Soo. In order to ensure they followed his will, the necromancer revived them with his will imprinted upon their hearts, and should they refuse to obey, their hearts would explode. And with his new army of dead men walking, he set out to conquer lands far and wide, ravaging anything and anyone in sight. These resurrected individuals—the very first deadmen—claimed the souls of many and feasted upon their victims’ bodies to gain more power. There is a myth that said this very feasting produced an immensely powerful being: the God of Death.
This myth goes on to talk about how a spiritually strong human was born into poverty, and they spent all their life struggling to cope with the death of their loved ones at the hands of the Necromancer’s army. Because of this, the gods took pity on them and gave them power over the underworld and spirits, telling his God of Death that they’d help souls find their final peace and build an army of their own to stop the Great Necromancer. With their newfound power and knowledge, the God of Death set out first thing to gather strength in power and numbers so they can finally put the Great Necromancer and his army to rest.
An Essence's Redemption
Blood battle waged for another century, but the God of Death managed to defeat the Great Necromancer, laying him to rest in the land that started this all. Most of his army were shown compassion. These souls that once fought for the Necromancer now were tasked with righting their wrongs under the death god, and helping some of the spirits they claimed finally rest. These souls, previously deadmen, now were known as essences: spirits with the power to resurrect the ones they hurt to help them carry out their last dying wishes. Of course, though, this was not without its perils...
The death god—being young and new to their role—didn’t realize that granting the power of resurrections to essences would upset the balance of the world. For every life given, another would be taken. As essences revived these souls, flora and fauna would all start to die off in great numbers in the living realm. Preoccupied with the underworld and its inhabitants, the death god was largely unconcerned and blind to this mass destruction until the start of the Black Plague (partly a result of this issue) alerted them.
With renewed focus, the novice death god was able to better control the rise of deadmen and essences who were unknowingly spreading this pestilence, but not without help. The gods who took pity on their newly appointed death god came up with a solution: every essence was tasked with aiding souls in completing the soul’s dying wish if an essence wanted to be laid to rest, like deadmen would for their own peace—and an essence couldn’t stop at just a handful of souls. The legend says that essences had to help five or six dozen souls before they could think of eternal rest.
And in the event an essence refused to be put to rest and started to wreak havoc on the living world, the gods created a contingency plan—reapers.
The Call for Reapers
The Great Necromancer's army having grown quite large and quite cumbersome over the centuries, there were still quite a number of them wandering the globe and causing problems for the rest of the world. Some spirits wanted to stay and refused to be put to rest, but others were more open to moving on. These spirits were later made into reapers: spirits that hunt deadmen and essences who have gone astray and are causing the world to fall to ruins. Where essences help to right the wrongs of deadmen, reapers would help to set balance in the living world once more. And for every deadman or essence they manage to rid the world of after they've done their deeds, they become one step closer to moving on themselves.
