“Jin Meixin. My Beautiful Plum.”
The woman was born to the Emperor of China. Her mother, a lowly concubine with the status of “Beautiful Woman”. And beautiful she was, the sleek midnight tresses of her mother’s hair flowed in a waterfall down to her arse. Her mother’s eyes were soft, delicate. Glossy to represent her kindness and value of her people's’ lives. As her mother’s name was erased from the minds, Meixin remembered each letter. Each .
凰美
Huangmei. Beautiful Phoenix.
Meixin’s mother adored her. Yet, feared for the life of her little one. As she had not bare a son. Fearing for her daughter’s life, Huangmei named her something different.
Jialong. Good Dragon.
Only holding her daughter’s name to her heart, Huangmei held Meixin and cared for her. In the day, Meixin would be trained and tutored like a son. Being taught how to wield a sword and master each skill of combat. At night, Meixin would be taught by her mother, embroidery, music, singing. She grew up beautiful. Just like her mother. Her long midnight hair would be tied up into a firm bun, her chest bound with cloth, and her beautiful features covered with a ceramic mask on the battlefield. She lived freely with her mother. Visiting her every so often as the crown prince beside her younger half-brother.
During a day of practicing, Meixin fell for the first time, her heart stolen by a childhood friend. The son of a general who favored the ways of a scholar over that of a soldier. He enveloped her heart and soon, he was all she could love. Yet, their love, that of a princess and the scholar was not meant to be. Her path of red string had already been woven. The stars found that she was to be destined for another. Not him.
Devastated, Meixin would see him from the corner of her eyes, always trailing a few steps behind. Where he belonged.
Soon enough, the weight began to weigh on her shoulders. Pile, upon pile. Before she couldn’t take it anymore. She beckoned for him. And as he followed after her into her chambers, she took off each and every equipment. She leaving her baren, save for the cloth binding her chest and her underpants.
“This is who I am.”
She was met with shock, with terror. An outlash that struck her across the face. Leaving her stunned. She was still their crown prince. Was she not?
Yet, not soon after. Meixin was brought before the throne room Staring into the eyes of her father whom stared at her with disgust. Her mother besides her. And again, there he was. The scholar who stood a few steps behind. Where he belonged.
“Who are you?” The Emperor had asked her. “I am Prince Longjia, Your Majesty.” Meixin responded. “Stop lying. Who are you?” There was a pause before the fair maiden spoke. “Jin Jia Long, child of Beautiful Woman Jin, Otherwise known as, Jin Mei Xin.”
Once again, silence. Then, the Emperor stood and slammed his hand against the armrest of his throne.
“Atrocious! A woman bearing the title of Crown Prince! What dishonor you’ve brought to the royal family! You should be beheaded for this!” “Your Majesty, please, allow me to explain-” Her mother’s voice rang through the throne room. Soft, yet controlled. However, she was cut off. “Learn your place! You have no right to speak!” Meixin’s father shouted. Sending them all into silence. “Longjia- No. Meixin. You are to be sentenced to death for your atrocious act at sun down.” The emperor growled out. Leaving the two women and the scholar alone in the throne room. “Father!” Meixin called after him, breathing heavily. Pain, ache washing over her before rage filled her every core.
She then turned, pushing the scholar against the pillar as her rage took control of her. She screamed and shouted at him, beating him. So much so that the guards had to pull their former crown prince off him. Throwing the woman into the cell where the murky smell and taste of festering meat and bodily fluid laid. While her mother stood there with no emotion to her once beautiful features.
Hours passed, Meixin’s eyes stared up into the golden light that seemed to die as the day went by. However, guards arrived. Grasping her once again before dragging her to her room. She was shocked. Why was she brought out of her cell when the hour hadn’t even arrived yet?
Questions. So many questions.
The sun continued to set, and Meixin grew anxious. She was locked in, left alone to her thoughts and her demons. The walls felt like they were closing in on her. Tightening, dimming.
Then the bell rung.
A loud, rumbling bell to symbolise the death of an individual. Usually rung when a royal family member died. Confusion washed over her. What was going on?
Then, the scholar rushes in, breathing shakily, heavy. He had brought news. As he spoke, Meixin’s eyes widened as she tuned out the scholar’s talk upon the news sinking in.
Her mother was dead. Her mother had revealed what she had done to the emperor and the emperor sought for her life instead of Meixin’s. Her beautiful mother… Gone. Breathing rapidly, Meixin turned, grasping for her dagger as she turned to look at her best friend. “I’m going after her.”
She plunged the dagger into her eyes, soft cries leaving her as she made sure to dig and damage them. Yet, the only image that had been engraved into her mind was the image of her mother’s body and her mother’s head on the ground beside her.
Years passed, Meixin’s eyes never healed no matter how many treatments they tried on her. To no avail, they found that the princess’ spirit had broken. Formerly bright and brilliant. She had dulled. Growing quiet, speaking only when required.
Soon enough, the Scholar found a cure. Offering his eyes to her as a redemption with a letter in hand. Only two simple sentences were seen on the scroll.
“Live. I’m sorry.”
It was successful. Meixin holding onto the eyes of her first love. Her first betrayal, her first heartache.
She was then sent to Goryeo. A gift offered from her younger brother who had been crowned Emperor after the death of their father during the time of her healing. Upon arriving in Goryeo, Meixin was accepted, despite her difficulties and her demons of misfortune. An outcast living amongst others just like her. With ghosts of their pasts following their every step as they aged through life.
Meixin found her family. Yet, she kept in touch with her sisters. Learning that her brother had turned into a tyrannical ruler. Paranoid of any and every uprising. Fearing death, himself.
However, Meixin could care less. Time went by as she lived in the Byun household. Growing fond of her family. Yet, a push came with a shove and she soon met the brother of her brother-in-law. Golden hair that seemed to be spun into fine strands. His eyes were the everlasting hues of the Korean Sea Meixin grew to love. His voice a sultry purr that had brought her into a new world. Lucky. Lucky. Lucky. He corrupted her mind. Corrupted and played with it in ways she despised. Yet- She bore him children. Li Jing and Li Yun. Dante and Tonio. Her affection only grew. However, she was in denial. Denying every instance of love. As she feared, for if she got too close. She would only bring death to her family.
Millennias have passed. Jin Meixin had gone through all three of her lives. The first, being that of the jade carved prince of the Han Dynasty, Jin Jialong. And the second--her lasting breath was Jin Meixin. The once bright and innocent beauty that was Jin Meixin had died at the hands of Lucky Blue Smith. And once again, Meixin Byun emerged from within it’s ashes and plummeted to her fall from her phoenix-like state. Meixin Byun died at the hands of her own suffering beneath the everlasting desire to obtain what she could never have… a happy ending.
Meixin lives now, nothing more than a husk reliving the memories of the past. She can laugh, she can sing, and she can still dance. She can still feel the flutters of butterflies and maybe even the rise of a .
But love? What is it exactly? Meixin is unable to perceive what love truly is now. Could it be infatuation? A little childhood crush that had no chance of getting off the ground? Or… did love leave behind bruises, mental scars which never truly, nor fully, healed? ual marks of anger and desperation, bodies entwined within their animalistic lust? Meixin Byun had no idea what love was anymore.
And… she preferred to keep it that way.
