*˚✦ About Deadmen
Deadman Origins
The Great Necromancer gained an army of the living dead when he revived the poor souls slain by King Soo. In order to ensure they followed his will, the necromancer revived them with his will imprinted upon their hearts, and should they refuse to obey, their hearts would explode. And with his new army of dead men walking, he set out to conquer lands far and wide, ravaging anything and anyone in sight. These resurrected individuals—the very first deadmen—claimed the souls of many and feasted upon their victims’ bodies to gain more power. There is a myth that said this very feasting produced an immensely powerful being: the God of Death.

This myth goes on to talk about how a spiritually strong human was born into poverty, and they spent all their life struggling to cope with the death of their loved ones at the hands of the Necromancer’s army. Because of this, the gods took pity on them and gave them power over the underworld and spirits, telling his God of Death that they’d help souls find their final peace and build an army of their own to stop the Great Necromancer. With their newfound power and knowledge, the God of Death set out first thing to gather strength in power and numbers so they can finally put the Great Necromancer and his army to rest.
About Deadmen
Deadmen are spirits of the deceased that were revived in order to complete their last dying wish. A spirit becomes a deadman when they die with a deep and burdensome regret so heavy that it follows them into the afterlife. They are specifically revived by essences who are most appropriate to help them with achieving their goal. When a deadman is brought back, they are brought back with a heart that is essentially a time bomb, their timers being located on their left inner wrist. Timers are written out vertically from days to seconds (day : hour : minute : second) and only essences, other deadmen, and reapers are able to see their timers. Of all the revived spirits, deadmen are the most like regular humans.

If you’re interested in portraying a deadman, your muse must not have a dying wish that involves causing another person or people harm. Please also keep in mind that your muse will have an IC time limit on their life as a deadman.
Other things to know about them
Below are some additional facts about deadmen and how they'll work in the RP.
  • They cannot exist without an essence as essences are the ones that revive deadmen.
  • Deadmen are trapped in Sacheon. After 5 minutes away from its borders, their eyes, nose, and lips will leak black liquid, they will feel weak, and their hearts will explode. If hearts short circuit, they can get jump started by the deadman’s essence within the next 5 minutes to save them. After that time period, the deadman and essence will perish.
  • Crimes can either deal damage (shock a deadman until their heart stops, stop their breathing for a few minutes, etc before stopping or before they need to be revived) or, if severe, will cause a deadman’s heart to explode.
  • Once a deadman’s timer reaches 00:00:00:00 and they haven’t been able to achieve their last dying wish, their essence will be put to rest and they will be reassigned with one more chance before they are also put to rest without a chance to pass on to the happy afterlife. If their timer runs out, and they have completed their dying wish, they will simply pass on to the afterlife.
  • Deadmen are more resilient against pain than the average human because they are beings that carry a heavy burden: their unfulfilled dying wish. They are still able to get hurt and will still feel pain, but the sensation is dampened, so in cases like when they get stabbed or break a limb, it’ll still hurt, but they’ll be able to tolerate it a lot easier because the feeling goes away quicker.
*˚✦ About Essences
Essence Origins
Blood battle waged for another century, but the God of Death managed to defeat the Great Necromancer, laying him to rest in the land that started this all. Most of his army were shown compassion. These souls that once fought for the Necromancer now were tasked with righting their wrongs under the death god, and helping some of the spirits they claimed finally rest. These souls, previously deadmen, now were known as essences: spirits with the power to resurrect the ones they hurt to help them carry out their last dying wishes. Of course, though, this was not without its perils...

The death god—being young and new to their role—didn’t realize that granting the power of resurrections to essences would upset the balance of the world. For every life given, another would be taken. As essences revived these souls, flora and fauna would all start to die off in great numbers in the living realm. Preoccupied with the underworld and its inhabitants, the death god was largely unconcerned and blind to this mass destruction until the start of the Black Plague (partly a result of this issue) alerted them.

With renewed focus, the novice death god was able to better control the rise of deadmen and essences who were unknowingly spreading this pestilence, but not without help. The gods who took pity on their newly appointed death god came up with a solution: every essence was tasked with aiding souls in completing the soul’s dying wish if an essence wanted to be laid to rest, like deadmen would for their own peace—and an essence couldn’t stop at just a handful of souls. The legend says that essences had to help five or six dozen souls before they could think of eternal rest.

And in the event an essence refused to be put to rest and started to wreak havoc on the living world, the gods created a contingency plan—reapers.
About Essences
Essences are spirits of the deceased that help other spirits (deadmen) achieve their last dying wish. A spirit becomes an essence when they die without redeeming themselves for an act that they have committed in their past, and when they are revived, they are revived specifically by the death god to help 70 other spirits with their dying wish before they are able to rest. Essences are able to revive other spirits (deadmen) and will be in charge of keeping their assigned deadmen alive, protecting them at all costs and guiding them toward completing their mission (achieving their dying wish).

In this rp, an essence is only able to revive one spirit at a time and will usually have been around for a while to learn how the world works for themselves so they are able to explain it to a deadman. We encourage you to have them overstay their welcome and have them stay beyond helping their 70 soul minimum. If you’re interested in portraying an essence, your muse will have to have committed a grave sin or just have done something they need to be redeemed for. This can be something as light as cheating on a spouse, selling someone out, or can even be something like trading a family member for money. It just has to weigh on their spirit heavily and cause deep enough regret to carry into their afterlife. It does not have to be a super heavy reason and we will be limiting muses redeeming themselves for committing things like murder.
Other things to know about them
Below are some additional facts about essences and how they'll work in the RP.
  • Essences are all named after mythological creatures.
  • Essences are the ones who revive deadmen and help them achieve their last dying wish so they can pass on.
  • If an essence dies, their deadman will also die.
  • Essences are more like ghosts and can only be seen by deadmen, other essences, or reapers.
  • Essences must regularly be near a deadman for them to stay alive. The longer they are away or the farther they are from their deadmen, the deadman will feel and be less alive. Their skin will start to decay and they will start to wither. The longest an essence can be away from a deadman is one full day.
  • Essences require sleep/resting periods in order to fully use their powers. They must sleep for a minimum of 6 hours.
Essence Powers
Because essences are in charge of protecting the deadmen they revive, they are given a few powers to help them do such.
  • Invisibility.
  • Phasing.
  • Teleportation. (to their assigned deadman)
  • Telepathic Linking. (to their assigned deadman)
  • Force Field Generation.
  • Energy/Aura Manipulation (make things alive, useful for their assigned deadman).
  • Psychic Attacks. (only works against reapers, essences, and deadmen trying to harm their assigned deadman)
  • Possession. (of living beings, temporary and doesn’t last long)
*˚✦ About Reapers
Reaper Origins
The Great Necromancer’s army having grown quite large and quite cumbersome over the centuries, there were still quite a number of them wandering the globe and causing problems for the rest of the world. Some spirits wanted to stay and refused to be put to rest, but others were more open to moving on. These spirits were later made into reapers: spirits that hunt deadmen and essences who have gone astray and are causing the world to fall to ruins. Where essences help to right the wrongs of deadmen, reapers would help to set balance in the living world once more. And for every deadman or essence they manage to rid the world of after they’ve done their deeds, they become one step closer to moving on themselves.
About Reapers
Reapers are spirits of the deceased that were revived in order to exterminate essences and deadmen who have overstayed their welcome. A spirit becomes a reaper when they have had a great sin or wrongdoing committed against them and they are revived as compensation by the death god. As reapers, they are able to help restore the balance to the world and are tasked with eliminating essences and deadmen, as well as any other reapers that linger beyond their time in the world. In order to be put to rest, they must rid the world of essences and their deadmen, but because of the nature of their role, they are only allowed to be put to rest when they can no longer handle their task (usually due to spiritual corruption).

In this rp, we will have a period of time called “The Culling” where reapers will be free to hunt as many essences and deadmen as possible, and outside of this, reapers will be assigned a deadman and essence. If you’re interested in portraying a reaper, your muse must have suffered an inconceivably negative emotion or have a heinous wrongdoing committed against them that continued to weigh heavily on them in the afterlife. This can be something like being cheated out of all their life savings by a merchant and stranded; or being abandoned by their family and left to die out in the cold; or even something as simple as being betrayed by the one they loved most (if you can build up the severity of the situation). We will be limiting muses who were murdered and became reapers.
Other things to know about them
Below are some additional facts about reapers and how they'll work in the RP.
  • Reapers are less common because they are chosen from the masses of the dead for their high emotional presence.
  • Reapers are all named after Chinese Zodiac animals and will be limited to 12 spots. These spots are also limited to 6 females and 6 males. Of the 12 reapers, 4 are leaders (snake, rat, monkey, dragon).
  • All reapers have a weapon of choice. (i.e. brass knuckles, nunchucks, dagger, etc; one per reaper)
  • An essence can kill a reaper in battle if the reaper is outmatched.
  • Reapers are similar to essences in that they are primarily seen by other reapers, essences, and deadmen; they may also appear before regular humans in instances where they need to gather information on deadmen.
  • Reapers require sleep/resting periods in order to fully use their powers. They must sleep for a minimum of 6 hours.
  • Reapers are headquartered in the temple, where they receive their instructions. Reapers are all connected by the temple and their overarching purpose, but have little relation to each other outside of that unless plotted.
Reaper Powers
Because reapers are in charge of eliminating deadmen and essences, they are given a few powers to help them do such.
  • Invisibility.
  • Phasing.
  • Telepathy.
  • Infusion. (Can only infuse psychic energy into their weapon of choice.)
  • Spatial Manipulation. (Manipulating space around them, limited.)
  • Energy/Aura Manipulation. (make things dead, absorb their energy/life force)
  • Psychic Attacks. (only works against other reapers, essences, and deadmen)
