He gambled a great deal of money & owed some loan sharks an enormous debt. He was able to pay most of it off, but just for spite the loan sharks tacked on an exorbitant interest fee, that he was not able to pay. Instead he offered Azusa, his stepdaughter. For fear of costing her mother's & her stepfather's life if she said no, Azusa agreed.
She then was sold to a Geisha house, where she learned singing, dancing & other facets of entertainment. Through hard work & perseverance she was able to reach the level of Geisha by her late teens. And this is the Azusa you see today: a mask of ladylike softness, belying a softer heart & an almost child like nature that is eager to please, mixed with a woman's sensuality. Little peeks of these inner qualities can be seen in Azusa's Geisha alter ego: Amaya.
