Things weren’t always this easy, in a period where fishermen earned very little and where they had to share their catch with the nobles, discord was easy to find. Our story starts even before this, it starts with a group merchants from the east, called by the king to protect the villagers from pirates. They got knighted, honour was bestowed on them but the villagers feared them, with little earnings they soon fell to madness.
Following the paths of the people they had been fighting against these men became pirates, their expertise far exceeded those of the other pirates as not only did they know how to fight they were well versed in battle tactics.
They gained fame quicker than they had expected to, sailors wanted to join them and their lonely ship expanded to a whole fleet. Nothing could rival it. But the captain and the rest of the crew was getting old. He shared his story with those he deemed worth of it. Most importantly, he shared his story with two children who would later become sailors on his crew.
His fame would have lasted forever, his money and treasures would have too. Life wasn’t that kind to him. After having accepted the two children who were now adults, who had lived by his ways, the captain finally closed his eyes and stopped fighting against his fate.
He left behind a legacy, a legacy over which all pirates would fight, the ship's name and honour. After he passed away everyone wanted to be captain, until one came and claimed that right for himself. It wasn’t ideal, but it worked for now. Even though most of the pirates of the fleet left, only the ones after the legacy and the real friends of the captain stayed, as did the two new recruits.
Time passed, discord hung in the air and when the time was right the two new recruits, one which had a strong mind, the other with a strong sense for everything that was right, took their chances. Overthrowing the new captain was easy. But the crew quickly took sides, half of which wanted to follow the one with a strong mind, the rest wanted to follow the other. There couldn’t be two captains.
Things only got worse as they found a letter the first captain had left behind, it spoke of a legacy hidden somewhere only his true successor could find it. This caused a rift not only in the crew but also eventually between the two friends who were each convinced that they were the successor the captain mentioned.
In a struggle for power to overthrow the other, the smarter of the two was thrown off the ship for while he was obviously the brighter one of the two, he was physically weaker than the other. The crew who supported that captain, left with him, leaving the ship with only half its crew once again.
The surviving captain retained the ship’s name, the Red Doom. The other captain, with the rest of the crew, built their own ship and eventually named it the Devil’s Treasure.
Both are good ships, both have a very different captain with each their own story.
Who will you follow?
