The emergency room was bustling with activity— it was one of those chaotic evenings where everyone seemed to be in a rush. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a patient running half down the hallway, desperately trying to escape a nurse wielding a syringe. She blinked a few times at the bizarre scene before shrugged off and continuing to the counter.

Minsu glanced up from her computer just as Nari plopped the reports onto the desk. "Here are the patient reports," Nari announced, resting her hands on her hips as she let out an exhausted sigh.

Minsu smiled and began sorting through the files. "You've been working hard today," she said warmly. Leaning against the counter, Nari chuckled. "Yeah, I wasn't expecting it to be this busy on a weekday," she replied, scanning the waiting area out of habit.

Her gaze moved across the crowded room until it stopped on a face she thought she recognized. She squinted hard, trying to confirm what she was seeing. Her eyes widened in surprise and she gasped audibly as she recognized who it was. "Miro?"

For a quiet, murmuring evening past midnight, with the sky already blanched dark, the hospital lobby still hummed with a quiet urgency—a mix of sterile smells and the occasional outburst: a cough, a child’s cry, or the wail of a distant siren. He hadn’t expected the place to feel so alive at this hour—he especially did not expect nurses and doctors in scrubs zipping past, juggling patients, paperwork, and whatever emergencies had spilled into the late night. Horror games truly did not capture nights in the hospital correctly.

He adjusted the bag of clothes, packed food saddled on his lap, and shifted on the cold metal chair for the nth time. What happened to those comfy lobby seats with thick cushions? Why were these chosen instead? Were they meant to be sat on? Or were they programmed to make the sitter feel like they should just pack their bags and go home instead of crowding the lobby? Or was he just getting old and losing the natural padding of his ?

He checked the time for what felt like the hundredth time and wondered if he should’ve timed this better. Like arriving when his cousin was already here, handing off the stuff, and leaving like The Flash. Well, that /was/ the very plan, but Nari was late, and Miro was back to giving himself a pop quiz about what was delaying her—hogged by a senior telling her what to do or a doctor who thought they were living in Grey’s Anatomy?
