@✧ Jaehyun Ten perked up at the appearance of an unknown voice, lifting his head to look at the man that had approached. He noticed the beagle leaving his side and jumping on the stranger instead, a small amused smile making itself known on his lips at the sight. He leaned back into his chair as he watched the owner and pet duo, taking in the newcomer’s features.
“Seems to have lost his way somewhere,” mused Ten coolly as he looked at the dog, tilting his head curiously. “Quite brave to be wandering around by himself though, I must say.”
Ten quirked an interested brow after hearing the name, taking a moment to realise that the word had been to address the puppy and not supposed to be a part of the sentence. “His name is Courage?” He sounded more intrigued than confused, eyeing the beagle in question curiously with a hum. “It’s an interesting name. Why Courage?”
“Have you been looking for him for long?” Ten asked, mostly out of courtesy. “Would you like to have a seat and rest for a bit before going? You’ve probably been very worried while trying to find him.”
Normally, Ten wouldn’t think about entertaining or humouring guests, finding the task of socialising with another functioning human being tedious. He preferred to send anyone who thought about interacting with him on their merry way, drowning himself in his own solitude. To put it simply, he just couldn’t bring himself to be bothered about having a normal man-to-man talk with anyone that’s human.
But Ten loves adorable puppies, and truthfully speaking he didn’t want to see the cute beagle going so soon. Plus, it wouldn’t hurt to have a little chit-chat with someone other than the dead. “Would you like to order something to drink or eat?”
@✦ Ten Out of a pure sense of the unknown, every ordinary human being once in a while caught themselves wondering about the afterlife, when their day of judgement would come. In Jaehyun’s case, the mentioned day seemed to be in the process.
His grandmother Muriel, as always, spent a greater half of her day in her little garden at the back of the house. She might not be the youngest, yet sometimes she appeared to have a better physical condition than her grandson. And as she’s been focusing her attention on the various types of plants, she somehow missed the moment when Courage – beloved family dog – disappeared from her sight and was nowhere to be found. His grandfather Eustace, despite his contentment with the absence of the barking machine, helped his wife in search of the beagle. By the time Jaehyun came back home from work, his grandma was already in tears. Naturally her desperation and fear for the dog were too strong to give him at least a moment to grab something to eat. He was practically kicked out of the house and told not to come back without Courage.
Strolling along the streets, Jaehyun was checking one corner after another and calling the dog’s name, hoping to receive any reaction in return. Nothing until his eyes finally spot a little tail wiggling right next to stranger’s ankle. From the distance, he couldn’t tell whether it was the beagle he was looking for or not. He chose to approach the stranger and have a better look at the animal. “Hey. It looks like my dog found a new owner”, he started from a little joke to catch the man’s attention as he took a sneak peek at the beagle. It seemed like after hearing Jaehyun’s voice, the dog suddenly lost interest in the stranger and quickly moved to jump on his original owner’s legs. Chuckling, he scratched the dog’s head. “I missed you too, Courage.”
@✧ Jaehyun Ten fiddled with the ear of his teacup, tea gone cold long ago. A half-eaten sandwich sat idly on a pristine plate, forgotten at one point. It was one of those moments for Ten again, zoning out all of a sudden and just letting his mind wander. It happened more often than not, without himself realising a lot of the times. It's a habit that he's used to and doesn't hate though, so it barely bothered him.
He snapped out from his trance however when he felt something bumping against his leg. Confused, Ten pushed his chair back a bit to look under the table, noticing a beagle staring up at him with tongue poked out and tail wagging. The little puppy barked happily at Ten, and an intrigued brow raised itself.
"Well, hello there?" Ten rested an elbow on his thigh, his other hand stroking the beagle's head. "What are you doing here all by yourself?" Glancing up at his sandwich, as if just noticing it was still there, he picked it up and gave it to the small dog. The beagle eagerly ate the sandwich offered and Ten smiled, continuing to pet the beagle's head. "Are you alone? Do you have someone?"
