—— LORE ——
In the year 1900, a devastating war for power consumed the earth. Many suffered at the hands of chaos, and the cities of the world have quickly fallen ill to its poison.
Death and danger lurked around every corner, dancing with darkness as it waited for unsuspecting victims, welcoming the fragile souls of those who have long since given up their will to live.
Around the 1970s, several countries around the globe have tried desperately to save themselves from the lingering effects of the war, establishing a number of livable communities amongst the destruction, and promising a safe haven to all who were lost and injured.
New Seoul, South Korea, was known as one of the first cities to have recovered so quickly, accepting people from all around Asia, offering them refuge and protection within their high walls. However, the new government had soon become disastrous as their population rose to impressive numbers.
Despite appearing like any other modern city, even New Seoul had some dark secrets of its own. Social hierarchies have quickly become the very basis of one’s worth as a person — if one had little wealth to their name, they would be considered ultimately useless to society. Poorer communities soon faced the prejudice of the upper class, forced into slavery in order to feed themselves and care for their families, or risk being dropped to the bottommost level of poverty.
Fueled by both fear and anger against the ruling government, the people of New Seoul began to retaliate. The formation of gangs have since then become a popular survival tactic. Despite not having the most forgiving conditions, at least being in a group provided people with a sense of safety and belonging, a home for all those who were rejected by the standards of high society. Together, these gangs have grown steadily over the years, using fear and violence as a way to communicate their hatred towards their tyrannic leaders. As their anger continued to fester, the gangs have become bolder, more reckless, soon becoming notorious for the influx of crimes being committed within the city.
Threatened by their overwhelming presence, the government raised another set of walls from the ground, separating themselves and the higher ranks from the average and the poor. They proceeded to close off a part of New Seoul and took with them their prized individuals, moving them to a better funded area of the city called the “Pristine Capital”, otherwise known as District Zero or the Inner Ring. Only the best of the best had the right to live here, while the rest of society were segregated into other different districts in the Outer Ring. Stricter rules have been established for them, and people have since then learned to obey the will of the iron law.
The mafia, on the other hand, bowed to no one but their own masters. They were fierce and merciless, easily the wealthiest out of everyone living within the Outer Ring. Some were allies and some were enemies, but all of them shared a common goal — and that was to destroy and gain control of District Zero.
But of course, the Pristine Capital was more than capable of keeping outsiders at bay. They were heavily guarded and armed to the teeth, thus pushing back most, if not all, civilian attempts to bring their walls down to the ground.
So, at present, the mafia could only dream. Instead, the predecessors of the current gangs have taken up other interests, soon passing on to them their own set of legacies. Some began to battle each other, with every godfather aiming to be crowned the mafia kingpin of New Seoul.
The government slowly lost its authority over the Outer Ring. Despite their countless orders, the mafia continued to run the parts of New Seoul that stood outside the borders of the Pristine Capital. The leaders of the country no longer mattered to most of the citizens that lived here, because to them, the rules of the mafia had become their only law. Although the Outer Ring is as peaceful as it could be most of the time, one should still not let their guard down if they wish to tread on mafia territory.
So watch your step and mind your mouth. In time, you will soon learn who you should fear the most.
