• gohyang(1) is nicknamed “cattail town” by south koreans because of the legend that the entire town was previously inhabited by only cats, who were then adopted by early korean settlers in the 1300s who founded the place to be what it is today. the cats passed away after a happy and safe life, becoming the cattail plants that grew in the ground. the nickname cattail town has since remained, but has evolved to calico cove city since its recent promotion from town to city in 2024.
• during the 1300s, koreans had a more negative view of cats, and since the cats in gohyang were treated with kindness and compassion, the human owners were rewarded with fertile land and lots of great fishing seasons. the town was originally named goyang (from "cat" in korean) but was changed to gohyang in 1413 to avoid confusion. this was because a newer city at the time, also named goyang was created when the two counties of gobong and deokyang were joined together that year by king taejong.(2)
• there is a large cat population in gohyang, both "strays" and as housepets, since residents are known to take care of them. stray dogs and other animals like birds are also being regularly fed. the stray animals are basically under the protection of the local government, gohyang has the lowest animal abuse cases in the entire country, totalling to zero.
• some families like the jang, ha, cho, and rang families are descendants of the original human settlers who started living in gohyang. there are a few other families like this but they are the most known because some have held high positions within government and community organizations.
• the local dialect known to be used by natives is the gyeongsang dialect, native to the yeongnam region where gohyang is located! aside from that, many residents are fluent in the seoul/gyeonggi dialect.
(1) - fun fact, gohyang's former legal name gohyang-myeon (myeon being the indicator for townships) can also be translated to 'hometown'-myeon aside from sounding like goyang-i (cat). it is fitting as this place is known as south korea's hometown for cats. if pronounced quickly, it sounds like "cat town." with its recent promotion to a city, it translates to "hometown city."
