@✧ kang seoah “My aura points are infinite, I don’t know what you’re talking about, Kang.” he scoffed playfully, even if he felt a little bit defeated when she made that shot. Which was more of his personal insecurity talking, especially because he had no issues with women being better than him. A lot of them were! But Seoah was not allowed to be a better shot, only for the sole purpose of the hypothetical future moment where she’s feeling sad (in general, by whatever problem comes up) and she’s watching him play. He’s imagined multiple times where he goes ‘This one’s for you, Kang Seoah!’ on the court but a lot of the time his sadder side takes over and even in his imagination … he misses. Those delusions were more insulting than his real life sometimes.

Unfortunately his weirdly degrading daydreams were dragged back into a very painful and heavy reality that he had been avoiding thinking about: his military service that he would have to do someday. Doyoon’s heart sank a little at the idea of it, being so far away from his dad, his friends, and Seoah. Seoah, who was also a friend, Doyoon just put her in a different category than the other friends. Like an S-Tier friend. “That’s true, if I can handle the Boss, I can handle anything.” A quickly passing thought came over him, his 2019 injury could have him be exempt, but there was a deep sense of shame that just came with skipping service.

“I also got reminded to buy two newer goggles, my one pair kinda died last week and – wait, your Uncle Yoon’s chicken farm is still up and running? Dang, let’s do it. I’m sure our aim is better than we think, those chickens will be completely safe! Plus, I never got to pet any of your uncle’s chickens because he was sober most of the time. That and for some reason, he watches me like a hawk. This is my chance.”

Doyoon snickered at her wordplay, taking the napkin from her that she was using to be extra dramatic, to wipe the teaspoon-sized black bean sauce that he had only now noticed was on his thigh. He wasn’t sure if it was a good or bad thing that he was wearing pants, wiping sauce off of his bare leg was always easier. But stickier.

@✧ cha doyoon "But does it give you as many aura points as me right now?" Seoah says smugly, still feeling proud for hitting her aim with one go. Once the young woman found a thing she exceeded at for even an iota of a second, she wouldn't let it go. There were moments where she would have forsook her promising career as a hair stylist for a chance to become a member of the South Korean bowling team. All it took was one single strike at the bowling alley and several somaek shots. Right now, Kang Seoah was ready to challenge the local basketball team with one offhand nickname Doyoon had given her.

"Saluting? I can't wait to tell her that when she comes back from her errand," Seoah muses, holding back a snicker, "Your sergeants are probably gonna sound rougher than that but just think of it as a preview into the barracks? Though if you want I could go in your stead, I've survived boss Kang Mihee so I could probably brave anything." Though it was a lighthearted joke, she dreaded the day her best friend would have to go. While they were so used to distance (it did nothing to keep them apart) she had grown weary of farewells. As she spoke, her words trailed off into a softer tone until she paused for a few long seconds. Not wanting to dampen the mood however, she picked herself up immediately and offered Doyoon a bright smile.

"Hm, that doesn't sound that bad actually. As long as we spot check eachother and have the proper gear it should be good. Just let me know whe- oh! Maybe we could do it at Uncle Yoon's chicken farm, I think my mom was gonna go there next week since he invited the oldies for some makgeolli. You up for it?" Seoah pipes up - making it completely obvious when the idea had popped into her head. "Of course, we'll have to do it somewhere completely away from the chickens, dont want those babies to get hurt or we'd have no discounted eggs for years."

"It's quite alright Romeow, you can always love the Catpulets from a distance." Seoah fakes a sniffle, taking an unused napkin from his side of the coffee table to pretend and wipe her tears away.

@✧ kang seoah The man was about to protest at her now using his term for his TMNT shirt to poke fun at him, but it settled into an admiring expression and his mouth forming an ‘o’ as she tossed the balled up paper into the wastebasket perfectly. It was even farther than what he could usually do, but he was never that great at basketball. “Good one, Lebron. But the chick magnet shirt only amplifies my charisma, like a magnifying glass or something.”

His face contorted slightly, both in amusement and just the itchy reaction people have to the uncanny valley. Seoah’s impression of her mother was so close to the real thing, especially when the daughter purposely copied her voice. “Jesus, don’t do that without warning. I almost saluted you for a second, you really sound like her when you try, you know?” he commented, resting his back on his seat before putting the whole egg in his mouth. He regretted this decision immediately but his hand moved on its own, his brain delayed in thinking that he could easily cut the egg into smaller pieces. His body taking over was a pretty common thing, it applied to his work and dancing too. Muscle memory kept him moving half the time. The full egg in his mouth definitely showcased his hunger and lack of care the past few days too.

“Thank you.” he said, the words lost and muffled with the egg in the way, but he kept his mouth closed for obvious courtesy. A moment or two later he finished the egg, swallowing big chunks as a part of him got excited that they would be filming something together again. It hasn’t been decades, but it has been a while. Adulthood really gets everyone so busy that old friends who were always attached at the hip for long had to pencil in meetings now.

“The trick is…” He made some noise and drummed his fingers on the table for dramatic effect. “Safety goggles and using sandpaper to make the pencils more blunt just in case they fly and go rogue on us.” The actual tricks weren’t very showstopping, but his safety goggles from work were basically his safety goggles while filming online videos. Sometimes he wondered how he lasted this long, he thought he was a goner in 2019 with the accident. An accident he never really brought up again, but it was a major reason why he does stunts and all but at a cinema-crew level of safety. Any genuine recklessness and his dad would lose his son and best friend.

At her last few words, his hands tapped his back pocket, feeling his Epipen just for safety. It might as well be a mainstay on his person like his wallet and phone are. “I was just born unlucky being in a cat town, loving cats but not being able to touch them. It’s forbidden friendship.”

@✧ cha doyoon A smug little smile appeared on Seoah's lips until she noticed the spills on Doyoon's shirt. Sighing, she grabbed a napkin and dabbed the black bean sauce off the TMNT graphics. "Wouldn't want the chick magnet shirt to lose points with the chicks now, would we?" she remarked, balling up the napkin and tossing it toward the trashcan. Perhaps the jjajangmyeon had granted her powers, as her aim was suddenly perfect and the napkin fell right into the bin. Seoah silently cheered before turning her attention back to Doyoon.

"Ah, back then I genuinely thought I was my mom's contracted worker at the age of five." She mixed some rice with her jjajangmyeon, savoring the taste for a while before speaking again. "Now she's like, 'Why don't you invite Doyoonie more often? It feels like I haven't seen that boy in ages!'" Seoah did a perfect impression of her mother, adopting an airier tone with a forlorn look cradled by her hand. "Frankly, I think she has a clear favorite here!" she exclaimed, chuckling. Holding her bowl close, she shook her head and finished up the rest of her meal.

"It's fine, I'm not really craving eggs today. You have it. Also, I'm full, you have the rest." She shot her friend a piercing look, standing up to gather the empty bowls together. While she figured out Doyoon hadn't had much to eat prior to this, it was also true that she was getting quite full from the meal. A bemused smile formed at his proposition as she moved the bowls to the countertop at the back of the salon. Striding back over, she sat back in her seat, taking a sip of her juice. "Next time my mom gets us food, I'll show up at your shop without notice. I'm sure the wood shavings will add some... texture to the food. She needed me to stay and keep watch over the salon while she visited her client."

"I'm not opposed to the idea; you just have to show me the tricks so neither of us end up poking our eyes out in the process." She hummed, leaning into the back cushion of her seat. "As much as I want to say yes to both, I think the former is much safer than me stabbing your leg with the Epipen. I'll still bring it, though, in case we do encounter a cat. Better safe than sorry."

@✧ kang seoah “Hey!” Doyoon attempted to initiate a verbal protest against her reply to his ‘chicks’ comment, but he didn’t bother because he had no idea how to rebut it. His first thought was that turtles and baby birds probably got along, but even he wasn’t sure if that had any scientific basis.

Doyoon was shoveling the noodles and crappy rice into his mouth like his life depended on it, letting out semi-muffled replies since there was food in his mouth. He was polite enough to keep his mouth closed while talking of course, even if there was enough black bean sauce spillage on his shirt. “Well, she is to me! Less of a tyrant, I think. I’m pretty sure I started calling her the boss because I had to get past her to go play with you when we were kids – it just stuck.” He grinned, his cheeks filled with food before the smile dropped. “Don’t tell her that, it’s crazier if she finds out I thought of that nickname when I was a kid. What are you–” The carpenter eyed his best friend’s hand as she gave him the hard boiled egg, thinking he didn’t need it even if his body was screaming for proper sustenance.

“We can cut the egg in half, Seo.” he nearly imposed, even though he knew she’d bruise him with her utensils if he actually tried to half the egg in front of her. It was expected that Seoah could read Doyoon like a book, even knowing when he was lying about (omitting) the fact that he hadn’t eaten for a concerning amount of time. It wasn’t like he could say no if she was feeding him, he kind of ate almost anything she and her family fed him. It didn’t help that their parents were friends, if he refused the family’s food it would go straight to his Dad who would playfully shame him until both Cha men went to sleep.

His chews slowed, wanting to savour the remaining food that he was going to finish. “I’m fine, but I also won’t say no to a chance to eat outside the workshop or my house. But you don’t need to call me, you know? Eat at the shop, with little wood shavings all in our food!” he joked, shoving in another roll of noodles into his mouth. “Your calves of steel would have more work if you walk all the way to the shop, so I can just come over. My calves are still, comparatively, jelly.” A lie and a joke all at once, Doyoon’s calves were great with how much /he/ stayed standing up or moving at work.

“Outside of work, huh…” The mid-level internet celebrity side of Doyoon was turning the gears inside his brain. “Why don’t you film a video with me? There’s been a few pencil trick shots I wanted to do, and I know you’d probably be better at it than me.” Oh, he hoped a compliment early on would convince her. It had been a while since they both actually did something that was outside handling the salon or building furniture. “Either that or you can watch me try to pet another local cat again. Bring the EpiPen.”

@✧ cha doyoon "Chicks like the ones that hatch in the farm nearby? I'm sure it does." Seoah remarks, wrapping the noodles around her chopstick and taking a bite. Delicious was an understatement, though perhaps snacking through the entire day definitely left a craving for a hearty meal.

"The boss is so generous," was enough for an amused snicker to deviate from Seoah's nose. In her all too imaginative mind, it painted a picture of Kang Mihee as this supreme mafia leader, granting her two henchmen a morsel of jjajangmyeon out of the goodness of her own heart. Having seen the older woman as both her boss and mother, Seoah deduced that such a title wasn't too far off from who she usually is. Despite that, she also wondered if Doyoon knew how much her mother cherished the young man. Though she supposed Mihee's all imposing aura may have gotten in the way.

"You call her boss so much, you clock in at the salon and see her in action, she's a real tyrant that one." She jokes, reaching over to take some of the scorched rice Doyoon had prepared. Taking silent bites into her food, she listens to Doyoon quietly (for once), it hadn't occurred to her that she was halfway through her plate until she reached over for more. Her eyes narrow in suspicion for a brief moment, but she doesn't press the matter further than stubbornly giving him the extra hard boiled egg.

"I should call you over more then so that I can make sure youre alive." Seoah quips matter of factly, leaning back in the sofa once she felt full from the food. A satisfied sigh escapes her lips, patting her stomach contentedly. Though this moment of relaxation is short as she continues to move again, this time stacking her empty dishes together in order to reduce clutter. "As for me, it's mainly been working on clients. Sometimes I'm standing for hours dyeing one clients hair, but I think I've gotten calves of steel as a result." She laughs a little, shifting her body to the side and kicking her feet up as if she were showing off her calves. "Though...once I'm done with working at the salon all I wanna do is sleep at home." Seoah sighs briefly, brushing her dark tresses back, "I really ought to do more stuff outside of work though."

@✧ kang seoah "You look like you just rolled out of bed," were the first words he had actually heard from her for weeks. In person, anyways. It was different with voice calls and worse with texts. Doyoon just guessed that he missed her voice more than he’d like to admit, they were best friends after all. He couldn’t resist laughing as he strutted a little closer to the coffee table at her suggestion, the juice and rice in its container. “Nah, I wear this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shirt outside because it gets me chicks!” he responded with playful sarcasm.

Doyoon quickly pulled out the plastic container where the semi-burnt rice was, tugging off the lid and putting it beside the jjajjangmyeon. The sight of the rice with the black bean noodle soup already made his mouth water. It definitely helped that his last meal was at 3am and it was a sandwich that was kept in the fridge a day too long, before he fell asleep without any attempt at watching the time. “The boss is so generous … I missed you too.”

“What was I doing?” The carpenter’s mind had flashed back to whatever significant events he had experienced the past week. He couldn’t reach far back enough in his memory to even remember the past two weeks since they were all a goopy blur in his mind. “Cleaning the workshop, inhaling sawdust, I did finish filming a choreography video. I think I cooked rice a few times? Honestly, if I check the annoyed messages my dad sent me, I can find out how many times I cooked my usual rice.”

He stretched his arms upward in an attempt to relieve the muscles that had been semi-dormant in bed for three or so days, groaning and plopping onto the opposite seat at the table. “No problem, that’s kind of all I got at the time. I overpacked my to-do list, so I personally think I would have died in my bed faster if you hadn’t called me for food–” He omitted the fact that his last meal was over 12 hours ago and that he had been sleeping all day from exhaustion. “I think I would just die without jjajjangmyeon.” He added to ease any hidden guilt he had about white lying to Seoah.

With the disposable chopsticks that came with the order, Doyoon picked up a bundle of noodles, the black sauce almost splattering on his shirt but his left hand’s reflexes were fast enough to protect his Turtles shirt (which was worse for wear already). “I’ll let you know but I think I might finish the majority of this … what have /you/ been doing? I’m not the only one who was gone for a week between us, this city is still small.”
✧ kang seoah 8 months ago
@✧ cha doyoon It didn't take long for Seoah to hear back from Doyoon, her thumb deftly switching between windows of her elderly game and the messages screen. Upon viewing the message, the hair stylist reacts to Doyoon's message with a thumbs up and pockets the device into the pocket of her cargo pants. The gets up from the chair after what may have been eons, taking a look at her surroundings. The salon wasn't a mess per se, however it was always a good idea to tidy up whenever guests were coming. Kang Mihee had drilled that into her head from the moment she learned how to speak.

With a stretch, Seoah gathered scattered magazines from the reception desk, stacking them neatly. Eyeing the coffee table, she anticipated it would serve as their dining spot and headed to the breakroom for cutlery and plates.

The first one to ring the bell was the deliveryman, staring blankly at Seoah through the face shield of his helmet, he held out the shopping bag of Jjajjangmyeon. "Kang Mihee?"

"Yes," Seoah affirms, taking the bag in her hands and tipping her head politely to the delivery man, who was already making haste for his next stop. She goes back to setting up their eating space, unpacking the jjajjangmyeon which was packaged in one-time tupperware. Still warm to the touch, with steam condensing at the top of the lid, a grumble erupted from her stomach - reminding her that instead of eating, she had been playing a flimsy mobile game for two hours straight. She hoped Doyoon would arrive soon, jjajjangmyeon never tasted good when cold.

"I'm here!" As if he had read her mind, the familiar voice had followed with a ringing of the bell and Seoah turned around from the coffee table to greet Doyoon with a smile.

"You look like you just rolled out of bed," she points out.

"She isn't here, she has to meet some clients outside the city. She told me to share this with you by the way!" Seoah says, giving Doyoon a languid nudge toward the coffee table. "But I /did/ miss you, it's been like...a week since we last saw eachother? What were you doing anyway? Oh, also thanks for bringing the rice and juice. We've got quite the spread."

"Take a seat," she says, sitting on one side of the small table and portioning out the still steaming jjajjangmyeon onto their plates. "Let me know if you need more too, mom said she ordered too much so you could also take the leftovers if you want."

@✧ kang seoah Doyoon’s father Sihu had warned his son at the beginning of the week to take care of himself. He had been giving Doyoon consistent warnings for three days, as his convention in Seoul for architects (Sihu meant to attend a few reunions with friends during this period) was starting on Sunday. He had left his son alone with some instructions, having very little hope that Doyoon would follow them.

He didn’t follow any of his father’s instructions when it came to cooking. Cleaning the house and workshop, manning the cashier, updating their newer designs for international measurement conversions, Doyoon could handle all that with ease. Put on top of that a 2-day filming of some choreography he’d been putting off for weeks. But with all those tasks and Doyoon’s perfectionist tendencies put together, he barely put in time for cooking and eating. He was thankful he had befriended the elderly snack bar owner who made the best fish cake hot bars. That and 3 different versions of his signature burnt rice (not burnt on purpose) was everything Doyoon had been eating for two weeks. With his roommate-father gone, he was free to handle all the tasks but only the tasks he wanted. Sihu had always been better at cooking rice anyway, it was second nature to Doyoon to ignore the rice cooker time and leave it to either burn or get soggy.

Day 16, the younger Cha had no idea what time it was. He was in bed, blinds closed, lights shut off and his digital clock face down. His phone dinged to life with a text notification and he swung out his arm to pick it up, nearly missing and having the phone almost fall off his bedside table.

“Ugh…” Knowing that it could tip over and fall at any second, he sat up on his bed, hair sticking up in all directions as his right hand adjusted his sleeping shirt. Half awake as his thumb entered the passcode and opened his texting app, Doyoon’s body reacted to Seoah’s voice message that he was unprepared to hear, the boy almost jumping in his seat before wading out of his own bedroom. He texted quickly in return, his divided attention bringing typos.

[ Sent to ‘Angry Bird Kang’ from Doyoon’s phone. ]
– awesome,, coming over now a nd bringin rice :rice_ball: :tornado:

Keeping his promise, Doyoon made it to the salon within 15 minutes. He looked more or less the same as when he was in bed, except he changed his boxers to sweatpants, but his Ninja Turtles sleeping shirt was still on his top half. Along with the basics (keys, wallet, phone), he also brought with him two orange juice boxes and a tupperware of extra crunchy semi-burnt rice with a few chunks of normally cooked rice in the middle. It was scraped from Doyoon’s family rice cooker before he left his home to walk to Belle Epoque.

He swung that door open like it was his own bathroom, the welcoming bell ringing harder because of his strength in opening. “I’m here!” he alerted, jogging to the receptionist desk and alerting Seoah before putting the tote bag with the rice and juice on it.

“Is the–” he looked around before he continued in a whisper, “boss here? Or did you just call because you missed me and needed me to be your vacuum cleaner if you can’t finish it?” His voice returned to normal after the mention of Kang Mihee’s nickname. Doyoon’s hands dug around his back pocket before he set his phone onto the table, facing downward. “Actually, don’t answer that. I’ll go with you missing me. I brought orange juice by the way.”
✧ kang seoah 10 months ago
@✧ cha doyoon While the salon was closed today, Seoah always found herself inside to do busy work or laze around whenever she could. In a sense it was her home away from home — and the same applied to her mother, who had scurried out of the waiting room and rushed over to the receptionist desk where Seoah was reclined against the office chair. Having finished the difficult part of her busywork, bookkeeping expenses, she decided to spend the rest of her time playing Crush Candy Saga of the Fizzies on her phone. Her peers would always question her taste in games, claiming that the applications on her phone were more akin to an ahjumma instead of a hairstylist in her twenties. Just as she was about to use the chocolate ball to move to the next level, Kang Mihee made her jolted right up with an ever so sarcastically calm, "Ya!"

"Didn't I tell you to stop doing that to the chair, it's going to break in half!!!" The older woman nagged, to which Seoah sullenly puts her phone down and sits up. "So what, we could always get a new chair."

"Gosh is this how I raised you?!" She groans, nearly forgetting why she came here before it hit her again. "Ah- right."

"Hm?" Seoah says, now slumped over the receptionist desk rather sluggishly. One would be surprised this was the same spritely hairstylist during normal work hours.

"I ordered too much jjajangmyeon, it should be coming any time soon. Call Doyoon-ie over and share it with him. I have to go to style a private client."

"But aren't you going to ea-" Seoah gets cut off by Mihee saying she would grab something on her way home.

"You better," she glares at the older woman as she leaves, not one that was filled with contempt but a paradoxical glare of concern. Now alone in the salon, Seoah picks herself up and takes her phone in her hands again, quickly recording a voice message for her childhood friend.

"Ya, my mom ordered jjajangmyeon. Wanna come over to the salon and share it with me?"
