✱ when the restaurant opened
the restaurant officially opened its doors to kyoto in january 1983.
✱ the nakamura family
the name "nakamura" — "naka", meaning "middle", and "mura," meaning "village, town".
the nakamura name is fitting for the family whose restaurant is seated not only in the heart of kyoto, but in those of the people who have been eating at their restaurant for years.
✱ our founder
nakamura haruto recently turned 72 years old on october 25. although he is too old to be working, he often visits the restaurant to spend time with his customers, especially the ones that have been going to his restaurant for many years.
✱ current management
haruto's daughter, hikari (39), has taken over the restaurant as its owner, while his son, haru (34), manages it as both its general manager and executive chef.
generally, both the employees and customers consider the nakamura family to be strict but kind and understanding.
✱ the famous fish cake corgi
the little corgi swimming in everyone's ramen is modeled after the family's dog, kōki. kōki was once a stray who used to sit outside of the restaurant when it first opened. haruto fed him for a while before he eventually decided to take him in. at first, haruto did not intend to keep the dog, believing that he had no time to take care of it when he had a restaurant to run. he did not expect to fall in love with him, however, and realized that he had no choice but to give in and adopt the young canine.
haruto named the dog, kōki, meaning "brightness," "light," and "hope."
kōki, who haruto always brought to work and was surprisingly well-behaved, was adored by the customers. he was known to sit in his bed placed in the corner of the restaurant by the counter, often seen sleeping or greeting customers with a wide smile.
kōki unfortunately passed of old age in 2001. in january 2003, on the day of their 20th anniversary, the nakamura family reopened their restaurant after a brief hiatus, revealing their renovations featuring kōki, haruto's beloved family dog, as slurping bowl's mascot.
to this day, kōki's pictures decorate the walls while his likeness floats in everyone's soup in the form of a bite-sized fishcake. his legacy carries on through yuki, another corgi the family adopted in 2015.
