Joon stood just outside Whimsy Bakery, his hands tucked into the pockets of his coat as he gazed through the large glass window. His eyes landed on the pastry display, where only one of each croissant remained. A single chocolate croissant, its dark streaks of melted chocolate peeking from crisp, golden layers, and an almond croissant dusted with powdered sugar, its filling barely visible from the flaky folds. He frowned slightly, debating whether he should indulge his sweet tooth. But perhaps it was just an impulsive craving, he reasoned.
He wasn’t particularly hungry, and there was no real need to treat himself. With a small shake of his head, as if to dismiss the temptation, he his heel and walked past the bakery, convincing himself that skipping it was the wiser choice. Yet, no more than a few steps away, his mind betrayed him, bringing back the image of those croissants, how the chocolate croissant would melt just right in his mouth, how the almond cream would add the perfect touch of sweetness. Joon exhaled sharply, giving in to the inevitable. Fine. Just one.
He pivoted and retraced his steps, already deciding which one he would pick. But as he stepped back in front of the bakery window, his expression faltered. His brows furrowed, lips pressing into a thin line as disappointment settled in. Inside, a customer stood at the counter, casually placing an order. And in the worker’s gloved hands were the very croissants he had just been contemplating and both of them, being placed into a paper bag, sealed, and handed over with a cheerful exchange. Joon sighed, his breath fogging slightly against the glass. He had hesitated too long. Now, there were no croissants left for him.
