@daniel howell Phil, while he loved his new little home, had a slight problem. There wasn't a school just yet and needless to say no children to actually school. For the time being he was unemployed, mostly thriving on his savings from his previous schooling job. His lack of a real town role made things a bit awkward, to say the least. He didn't have much of a schedule or routine yet. Of course, it's nice to be lazy, but he couldn't help but feel like a pretty lame excuse for a member of a growing society. He had started spending his time gardening and playing video games.
This stranger he met at the game store was the first interaction he'd had in the town other than his parents and brother who occasionally came to visit. He was British as well which threw Phil for a slight loop. A bit weird, but a bit comforting too. He seemed invested in the gaming life and that brought out a side of Phil he hadn't actually shown in years, too socially awkward and invested in his job to do things like socialize at the local Game Stop. Appropriately Phil grew to enjoy this other tall British gaming nerd. He wouldn't say it because he knew it would be awkward, but he could think it.
Phil was standing at the front of a small display filled with video game branded merchandise. You know, the stuffed Five Nights at Freddy's toys that were painfully overpriced and the Overwatch figurines that he was almost too scared to touch. He was just browsing, when suddenly a familiar voice startled him from his thoughts. He yelped and dropped the small packaged Pokémon's children toy he was examining (because who wouldn't want a mini Bulbasaur in a Pokéball sitting on their desk?) and spun on his heels, hand going against his chest.
"Oh!" He recognized the face. "Jesus, okay." He almost smiled at his own jumpiness and slumped over in relief. It was nobody new, just the stranger here again. It took him a bit longer than it should've to process the words he said and he almost jumped again when he realized he hadn't responded.
"Oh, yeah! Names, huh? 'm Phil. Or Philip, actually, but that's a bit formal?"
@philip lester Socially awkward, Daniel hadn't had very much luck making friends since he came to town. There were a few small conversation here and there, but nothing he would call significant. That wasn't to say that he hadn't made the occasional acquaintance or two, but there still wasn't anyone he would call a close friend. So, most of his nights were still spent at home, alone, playing video games all by himself. There were, of course, the occasional friends that he might make through playing games online, and his evenings would be full of constant banter with voices he couldn't put faces to, and no names beyond the gamer tags everyone called each other by.
The gaming shop, however, became a second home to Dan. He knew the cashier here pretty well, and he even ran into a couple of regular customers frequently. The fact that he, as a customer, was beginning to learn other regulars--maybe that should have been an indication that this was becoming a problem. His addiction to games, that is. But then, everyone had their own hangups, right?
There was one particular customer that Daniel had come to know well, and...would he be lying to say that this particular customer hadn't become one of the reasons he came to look forward to his regular trip to the store? It was rare to find someone just as socially awkward as himself, but this guy seemed to check all the boxes. Every time the two ended up in the store together, one of them would strike up a conversations with other. Funnily enough, Dan is pretty sure he failed to have ever gotten the guy's name, so he always referred to him as "the second biggest nerd in town", claiming that no one could take his own place as the /biggest/ nerd in town.
A wide smile grew on Dan's face when he saw the guy in the store this time. He approached, all socially awkward first conversations out of the way--it almost felt natural now. Like this guy, who still didn't have a name in Dan's mind, was almost like...a friend. "Can you believe we've run into each other this many times by now, and I somehow never managed to ask your name?" Dan started, not exactly knowing how to strike up a conversation this time, but guessing this would be the best way to get a friendly start. "I'm Daniel, by the way."
