@☠ Derek Mantaya The nymph’s brows could only furrow more at the behaviour of the other man. Even in his youth, Jianhong had not been so disrespectful to strangers. Nonetheless, he’d already upset a family of vampires during the festivities by slipping off to spend time with their uncle, and would not like to make more enemies. A step back was taken from the man, to avoid any further mishaps between them. “A chicken? That feels quite unfair to call the one you have affections for.” The assumption was made based on the term used - though he couldn’t guarantee it to be correct.

“/What/ am I?” He inquired slowly. It was uncommon for people to ask for species rather than name first, and he could already tell he may be disgruntled by the man in the course of their conversation. “It’s unreasonable to place judgement on a person based off of their origin.” Shaking his head, the nymph drew himself up taller. He was the same height as the man before him. There came the question on his clothing - perhaps some attempt at amending the conversation could be made? “I had no pink clothing, and I wasn’t looking forward to trying to find something traditional in the colour.” Jianhong also walked to the rack of weapons, seizing one of his own. He didn’t like the feel of the city provided ones, but it would do for competing.

@✧ An Jianhong Derek retracted his arm back once the other person steadied himself, dusting it off as if something disgusting had touched it. After being around Youngmi for a while, he had tried to hide his usual reactions to creatures, but sometimes he just couldn't help them. There was years of hatred that he couldn't shake off over night. He closed his eyes, pushing away the urge to grab his knife and drive it straight into the creature's neck.

"That isn't a young man. He's a chicken. " He opened his eyes,  frowning a bit. "And what is it that you think I'm doing? What are you, anyway?" He pressed his lips into a thin line, trying to control his expressions. This is was nicest he could manage. He didn't wait for the other's answers and walked ahead towards the bow racks, grabbing one that looked decent before testing the band of it. "I'm guessing you aren't human." His eyes flickered over to what the stranger was wearing, a small scoff pulling from his throat.  "....Red?"

Amine could have blasted the center out of the target, if he'd really wanted to. However... he was still in the role of the useless human, and his arrow landed poorly in the target. Schooling his expression into one of disappointment, he brushed his fingers through the dark locks that fell over his forehead, picked up his bow, and left the field to put his bow away. His head was ducked when he walked past their team captain—Lio Fotia a captain, Amine couldn't stop laughing when he'd heard—as though he was ashamed of his performance, when in reality, Amine's performance was extraordinary. No one saw through him. And no one ever would.

"Hey," he uttered to the woman who stood by the bow rack. Amine carefully shelved his tool—his mother would break it over his back if he showed disrespect to any weapon, even a cheap plastic competition bow provided by the city—and straightened to look properly at her. "How's it going?"

@☠ Derek Mantaya Jianhong had not been expecting to participate in sports. He kept himself fit, and able to defend himself. But he did not compete - it would take him away from the comfort of his cottage, or the safety of his willow tree. A second problem had arisen when he had no pink clothing. He wasn’t about to invest in a new wardrobe for the sake of a competition, and so the nymph had settled for the brightest red he could find. It didn’t quite fit the criteria, but it would do. Jianhong was approaching the rank of bows and quivers when he heard an obnoxiously loud shout from close by. He looked up, glancing at the shouting man and following his gaze. The poor blonde creature that appeared to be the subject of the calling was already trying to run and hide behind the nearest tall teammate to blend in. Poor lamb.

However, his sympathy left him unaware of his surroundings, and the nymph startled when a weight knocked into him. Being a man who wore only traditional clothing, Jianhong found it harder to keep his balance, gripping on to his attacker awkwardly to prevent them both landing in an embarrassing position. He released the man, stepping back, his brows furrowed in a look of minor irritation. “Perhaps you should do the same. Instead of shouting at young men, perhaps you could participate in the events?”
✧ Derek Mantaya 3 years ago
@✧ An Jianhong Derek didn't own a piece of pink clothing in his wardrobe. But then again, he didn't own much of anything outside of black and white. Even now, the muscle T-shirt that he'd worn today was white. But when he had done his laundry a couple nights before, he'd forgotten to separate the colors, dyeing the white fabric a light pink color. It was pink. It worked. After failing to participate in the first competition when Youngmi was captain, Derek felt bad. So he planned to do his best during the archery competition. He didn't use a bow and arrow often, but he was sure it couldn't be too hard.

He turned around, eyes scanning others in the pink team to look for his light haired friend. When he caught sight of Youngmi's angelic smile, he waved. "THIS IS FOR YOU, BABY," he shouted, aiming to embarrass his friend a little. He smiled,  turning his attention back to make his way to his spot when he bumped into someone hard, knocking him back a few feet. "Watch where you're going, idiot."

@☠ Amine Reivana Sunlight. It was so unbearable. It made her skin itch and burn. But luckily the sky had been a little more than cooperative and decided to cloud when she stepped out to participate in the archery competition. Usually Narok only made herself seen at night, where it was dark and she couldn't see anyone's faces properly. Now that everyone's faces were visible, she grimaced, expression skewing into one of disgust. "I didn't realize everyone was so.. mediocre in the light. " Much different from when she would go out to the bars or clubs. Maybe she was too sober. She fixed the veil atop of her head before strutting her way to pick up the bow with two fingers, her free hand lowering her sunglasses, pink lips pursed as she studied it. She wasn't familiar with archery and she wasn't going to embarrass herself trying to learn now, so she tossed it back against the rack and dusted off her hands before looking around, eyes landing on another one of her teammates.

"Indeed. It would be disastrous. There's not enough water around here to drown him in; they should have had the games near the sea," Akaedi mused. "Of course the games aren't fair to the humans. But they're organized in a way that pretends to be, and human folly makes them believe they're superior to everyone else anyway even if there's an overwhelming amount of proof otherwise. They puff out their chests and strut about like they're going to be superior competitors, but if one team was all humans and the other team was all 'monsters', they would never stand a chance."

Akaedi arched a brow. "Everyone has a different definition of fun. If I want to shoot something, I have other tools I could use to do so," he pointed out. "I don't see the appeal of shooting a stick from another stick with a string attached, but... to each their own."

The head of Vos sighed, but followed Jinhai's instruction. The pirate knew what he was talking about, so there was no reason to ignore him. He fixed the position of his arm and drew the arrow back to the corner of his lips, feeling a touch awkward from the unfamiliar action. No, he would never quite understand the rage about archery, he mused to himself as he took a shallow, calming breath and finally loosed the arrow.

@♆ Evelah Irithyl "I know plenty about being ethereal. As for the angelic part, if I'm judging the term based on your behavior, I must be a god." Atlas shook his head and pulled out a mirror from his pocket to fix his hair, frowning when he saw his bangs were losing some of their volume. Ignoring her growling, Atlas set about fluffing his hair back up and sliding strands to their rightful place. It was becoming increasingly obvious that this angel was dead set on proving a point. A point that Atlas found neither sharp nor particularly threatening.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm an awful person, I'm lazy, I'm lacking in morale. No one is more aware of my personality than me. You're doing nothing by stating the obvious." At the promise though, Atlas's eyes flashed a vivid green before calming down to their more dark, dull shade of olive. A grin spread across his lips, showcasing a few teeth that were just a little too pointy, enough to be unsettling. "Would you be willing to promise?" he asked. Fae took promises /very/ seriously. If one person didn't hold up their end, they would face dire consequences. In the courts it meant dancing in hot iron shoes and eating food cooked in salt. Torture worse than death. Atlas sat up, head tilted to the side. "If I shoot an arrow and it lands in the middle of the target, you have to eat a frog. Raw. It can be dead. Do you promise?" Atlas stared the angel down. With her pride, he doubted she'd back out. Oh this was going to be fun.
✧ Nam Minsoo 3 years ago
@♬ Atlas "..." He was making a good point. This was not life or death, and Evelah knew she had made a mistake by trying to force the pixie to practice- but backing down now would be too embarrassing. Anyways, if he couldn't take a game seriously, who's to know if he'd be of any use in a real confrontation. Yes. She was doing this for him, trying to teach him some responsibility and conscientiousness. Even if he couldn't see it now due to his short-sightedness, he'd thank her for this later. Definitely. Her expression soured when he questioned her heritage. "Neither of which you would know anything about.", she snapped back at him. A faint growl rolled out of , soft but noticeable like a whisper in the wind.

The pixie's glare inspired her with confidence and she smirked rather smugly, arms folded in front of her defensively. "As am I, who would want a miscreant like you for a son?", she scoffed and gave him a slow wand extremely judgemental once-over. The bow was pulled back down out of the dirt and she brushed it clean with her hand. "If you're good at archery, I'll eat a frog.", she said matter-of-factly. There was no doubt in her mind that he had to be incompetent. There was simply no question. Another arrow was cocked and fired at the pixie. There was no lethal intent behind the shot, she was just trying to bug him. She fired another, both aimed at the same spot between his forehead.

@♆ Akaedi Vos "With all the vampires around, it's likely for the best," Jinhai agreed with a sage nod. "Though these games are very much not fair to the humans. Their strength is meager and their skills are meek. They would never be able to compete with anyone else in this competition if they were on their own." The Mer began to reach for his flask out of habit, then stopped himself. He sighed and turned to grab a water bottle from a nearby table instead, grimacing as he took a long gulp. Not nearly as good as wine, he thought in despair.

Sighing, Jinhai shook his head. "Archery nowadays is learned mostly for fun. It /is/ fun, you know. And very satisfying when you hit the target. It's almost as satisfying as a nice, warm cup of plum wine on a cold winter day." The Mer sighed dreamily just thinking about it.

Still daydreaming about wine, Jinhai blinked a few times as he watched Akaedi. "Keep your arm lifted," he said with a tsk, tapping Akaedi's elbow. "Keeps the bow steady while you're aiming. And pull the arrow back all the way to your chin, right by the corner of your lips."
♬ Atlas 3 years ago
@♆ Evelah Irithyl "Not really," the pixie responded, picking up a feather that had fluffed out from the pillow to inspect it. "They're just games, you know. It's not life or death. Nothing happens if we lose except that we lose. It will be no different than things are now." Atlas opened his fan again and yawned, wondering if he'd be able to take a nap with the angel nagging at him. She'd give up eventually...right? "Sheesh, lady. You're way too intense. I don't want to practice and you're wishing death upon me. Not very ethereal or angelic of you, is it?" Atlas clucked his tongue and rolled his eyes.

Now the pixie laughed, the sound lilting, like the twinkling of bells. He sat up and shot the angel a glare. "So following the death threat you're trying to bribe me? Interesting. It won't work. I'm fae. I have all the magic I need. You know in some mythology, fae are said to be the children of angels and demons. It's not true, but after meeting you, I'm even happier." Atlas laid back down. "Besides, you act like I'll do poorly just because I refuse to practice. I haven't even touched a bow yet. You don't know if I'm bad or good. I suppose you'll just have to wait and find out, won't you?"
✧ Nam Minsoo 3 years ago
@♬ Atlas "Is that so? So you don't care about letting down your team?" She couldn't understand people like him. No, one step further, they made her blood boil. Parasites. Leeches. Rats. Vermin, the lot of them. A plague to society. At least he shut his fan. That made Evelah feel a little better. Her tense features relaxed and she straightened her posture. Her lips stretched into a sneer. "The moment you joined this team it became a 'we' problem. Don't you have any sense of responsibility?!! ...It's a shame none of them succeeded."

Evelah rammed the bow into the ground so it stood freely and pinched the bridge of her nose, sighing, the other hand on her hip. "Look." She lowered her hand and peered down at the little fellow. She'd be damned if she let this twerp rile her up. She was better than that. 'I'm a great, admirable person who is worthy of respect. I sacrificed everything for the person closest to me and don't regret it. I'm honourable and magnificent.', she thought to herself, repeating it in her mind like a mantra. "How about this? If you practice to my satisfaction, I will infuse a talisman with a magic of your choice - within reason, of course. I'm not letting the team lose, because of your laziness."

Akaedi shuddered. "The last thing we need is for Kivari to be involved with fire in a competitive sense," he grimaced. The likelihood of Vos' phoenix getting overexcited and burning the city was... higher than the head of Vos wanted to give much thought. "Let us be grateful that these games are supposed to be at least somewhat 'fair' for the humans."

"Archery was common among /land-dwellers/," Akaedi pointed out. "I wasn't born until the 1800s, and I didn't leave the water until I was in my fifties. My goal was not to take up archery and gallivant about with a bow in my hand. It didn't serve my purpose and so I had no need to learn." The Mer shrugged. "You're right, I had no use for it. I still have no use for it, except when Ziminiar decides it's time to drag the city out for the summer games."

Huffing out a soft laugh, Akaedi stepped into an archer's stance and nocked an arrow on the string of his bow. "Perhaps they will, perhaps they won't. You're just going to have to find out, aren't you?"
♆ Liu Jinhai 3 years ago
@♆ Akaedi Vos "Logic is dumb," Jinhai grumbled. The Mer could be serious and wise. Those times were usually when he hadn't had any alcohol that day, which definitely wasn't today. But after being alive for so long, the novelty of the human world had worn away. Alcohol kept his days passing.

"If any of these competitions involved water, we'd be at an advantage. Fire would likely lean towards the phoenixes and dragons. Good thing all the events in this stupid thing are human-made sports and activities." Jinhai made a tsking sound. "Archery was common all over the world, Akaedi. Not just China. In the Americas, bows were used for hunting. Longbows were also used throughout Europe! You're the one who decided you hadn't any use for it."

Jinhai slung his quiver over his shoulder, fixing his clothes, and then his long hair, the many beads and shells that he had braided and threaded into it clattering softly. "Yeah, yeah. I doubt half of these children will listen to me anyway."

"Improve your logic," was all Akaedi had to say in response to that. Though he was far younger than Jinhai, he often found himself faced with behavior from the other Mer that one might expect from a young spawn rather than someone who /should have been/ a mature elder. It didn't faze him anymore than it had fifty years ago. "After the competition," Akaedi agreed, his shoulders relaxing a little.

"If the javelins had been tridents, I presume most of the blue team wouldn't have known what to do with them," Akaedi agreed, walking alongside Jinhai. "Of course, they have Kallistae, but she'd rather swallow glass than actually /practice/." Such things happened when one grew up spoiled. Akaedi certainly couldn't relate. Rolling his eyes, he waved the other man off. "I have no need for archery. Does this look like the Han or Tang Dynasty to you?"

Akaedi watched as Jinhai fired, the arrow nailing the target. Hmmm. Well, at least there was that. "It won't kill you to wait until after today's game is over," he responded, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he stepped to another target and dropped a distasteful gaze to the bow in his hands. "It won't even be a full day without liquor. Be a semi-sober captain for your team."
♆ Liu Jinhai 3 years ago
@♆ Akaedi Vos A pause. Jinhai blinked once. Twice. Thrice. "So it does," he said finally, looking at the sky. "I knew that. I just got them mixed up. That doesn't defeat my point, though. Don't diminish my logic based on better logic." The Mer put the flask away and crossed his arms. Four centuries did nothing for his maturity, the Mer nearly pouting as he refused to look at Akaedi. "Fine. I won't drink anymore," he agreed with a sigh. "Until after the competition," he amended quickly. "Or...until after I shoot. Happy?"

Scowling himself, Jinhai grabbed his bow and trudged off closer to the practice range. "Yeah, yeah. If only the javelins had been tridents. Then we would've done better. You'd be better with a bow if you practiced. Archery was all the rage in the Han Dynasty. Tang, too. All of them, really." Jinhai notched his arrow onto his bow and lifted it above his head, pulling down as he went. He had requested to bring his own traditional bow, not liking the modern plastic ones. A pause, a breath, a zing through the air and finally a thunk as Jinhai sank the arrow dead onto the center of the target. He grinned as he lowed the bow, proud of himself. Four thousand years hadn't gone to waste, after all.

Jinhai looked at the other Mer. "You're still not going to let me drink, are you?"

Impervious to Jinhai's range of facial expressions that would make a lesser man soften, Akaedi raised a brow. "Jinhai, the sun /does/ rise in the east," he uttered patiently. When Jinhai's hand shook, Akaedi's brow raised even higher. "Your hands are so steady," he agreed, his words dripping with sarcasm. "This is a competition of accuracy, not a battle on a ship. The circumstances are different. And as you've said so yourself, we're on land." The younger Mer shook his head. "Our team is already behind a game, don't cost us this one because of overconfidence."

Akaedi scowled. His edge didn't need to come off, he was fine as he was. A little abrasive, but fine. "I'll drink later," he answered, "my archery skills are bad enough when I'm sober." Akaedi fought closer to the traditions of his pod, all sharp claws, sharp teeth and blades if he had to rely on weapons. After forming Vos, he'd also taken up firearms, but bows were not his style and he had never quite gotten the hang of using them. Jinhai, he knew, was a talented archer, but Akaedi did not have as much faith in his skills when he was drinking. After all, one could never tell with the old Mer. He could have downed one flask now, but drank three already before arriving to the competition grounds.

@♆ Evelah Irithyl "Yes," Atlas said almost immediately to the question. "I don't find losing humiliating if I never planned on winning to begin with." The pixie rolled his eyes and shut his fan, propping himself up on his elbow. "You know, all of this sounds like a 'you' problem and not a 'me' problem. /I/ don't care if we lose. You do. I don't care if I do well in this competition...you do. Yeah, I don't see why your annoyance and short temper has anything to do with me. You should work on that."

The pixie pulled the arrow from the pillow and tossed it aside, laying back on it and not minding the puff of feathers that blew up as he did so. "If you're trying to intimidate me, it won't work," he called out, stretching his lithe frame out. "I grew up in the fae realm where people tried every other day to 'accidentally' throw a knife at me or shoot me with an arrow. Poison, sometimes. Maybe you should try yoga. Helps with stress."

@♬ Atlas Evelah was already reaching the limits of her patience, her eyes narrowing as she stared down at the tiny pixie. He was almost 30cm smaller than her, which, quite honestly, made him seem all the more pathetic. She already hated the sound of that fan. She had waited for him long enough already, and all he did was whine and flutter that useless piece of lace as if it was good for something.

"Because", she started slowly, even as she spoke thinking how logic would probably be of no use with this one, "I can only participate once. Can you take the humiliation of losing to a ghost who can't even touch a bow, let alone shoot it?" Sorry, sister, she thought to herself. Did she think trying to hurt his pride was going to work? Doubt. Considering how he walked around the place, she questioned if he even had any in the first place.

"Get up and stop being pathetic." Evelah lifted her bow and cocked an arrow in place. The wood and feathers whistled in the wind, the arrow aimed to pierce through the lace and lodge it into one of the pillows the pixie was so comfortably lounging on. Fingers crossed this would work. It had riled up a lot of young angels back in the day... they were more hard-working than pixies though. The more she listened to Atlas, the more she compared pixies to mosquitos.

Jinhai made another face, this one much more childish, then took another drink to make a point. "It's not like I'm drinking to get /drunk/. It steadies my hands. See!" Jinhai held out one hand to make a point, but it still trembled ever so slightly. Seeing it, he quickly dropped his hand. "It's because we're on land," he mumbled. "I've fought off whole crews singlehandedly off of three deerskins. Archery is no problem." Jinhai waved a hand dismissively. Akaedi worried too much, in his opinion. Jinhai drank often, but not a lot. At least, that was what Jinhai tended to think. Alcohol had been his companion for centuries. Kicking his plum wine that had been aged one hundred years under a cherry blossom tree was hard, and he had no interest in quitting. Alcohol didn't rot his insides and brain away like it did for humans, though he knew in the very pit of his heart that he needed to quit. Just...not now. Later. "I'll be fine," he assured, masking his swirling thoughts with one of his easy smiles. "Maybe you should drink some, Akaedi. Takes /your edge/ off."

"Hmmm," Akaedi agreed, a quiver slung across his back and a bow in hand. It was an unfamiliar weight—the head of Vos didn't do much in the way of archery. Would it be too blunt of him to say he agreed to the questionability of Jinhai's leadership skills, outside of captaining a ship?

"/Jinhai/," the younger Mer started, his tone one of scolding. He watched in mild horror as Jinhai drank from his flask, and raised a hand to press it against his own forehead. "Jinhai, stop drinking. This is a /competition/, plankton-for-brains." He clicked his tongue in disapproval, Jinhai's speech growing more and more confident as he continued to drink. "The only thing you're going to be renowned for is your love for booze if you continue to dull your edge with its influence." If an outsider understood Mer, they'd find his tone to be sharp, but for Akaedi Vos, it was a mild scolding. "This is why you're a questionable choice. Atlas had only bothered coming and participating in the game for two reasons. One: his cousin Monarch threatened to eat his house brownie that did all of the house cleaning if he didn't come. Two: Atlas was on Ziminiar's team. Ziminiar, whom Atlas had a giant crush on and kind of wanted to impress. Not in a try-hard way, though. In an effortless way. And sweating was not part of Atlas's definition of "effortless". In fact, he planned on mostly lounging in the shade in some slightly revealing clothing, fanning himself while peeking out demurely from over the top of the lace on the fan.

Evelah seemed determined to change that, though. Even as Atlas was giving her an incredulous look as she tried to get him to pick up a bow and at least /try/ to pull back on it. The pixie looked out from the shaded awning he was seated under, then towards the area Evelah was in. Full sun. Atlas shook his head with a scoff. "Ew, no. I'll sweat if I practice. I don't sweat. Besides, if you're so good, why don't you just get all the points for us?" Atlas opened his fan with a thwoop sound, looking away as he fanned his neck.

Evelah stood waiting on the training grounds, before the start of the games. She was grasping a longbow which she held like a staff, planted into the ground. Contrary to her slender frame and whimsical dress, she stood solid and firm, her gaze hard. Evelah was competitive by nature and while she was happy for her sister's team, and amused that Eva had successfully sabotaged the pink team, she wanted to win this round. And so, she decided a few team members were going to need some training. One of those people was Atlas, a lazy fellow who might not even bother turning up for the competition. Or at least, that was the impression she had gleamed during their brief encounters.

As an angel, Evelah had not bothered with archery much. Her main weapon was a sword imbued with holy light. That wasn't an option, having ripped out her own wings and fallen to earth. Since descending she had been very thankful to her mother's heritage who, according to her inquiries, had been a powerful high elf whose only downfall was her romantic tendencies. She had half of her mother's blood and with it, access to elven abilities she had never invested in while living in heaven. It was a whole new world to discover and train, and one of many abilities she had quickly managed to tap into, was archery. Although, that might just have to do with her being fast and learning in general and physically capable. Nonetheless, she considered herself one of the better archers of the team - to be modest about it - and she'd be damned if a lazy pixie made them lose.

Jinhai picked his bow up, inspecting it carefully before pulling back on the string to make sure it was taught. "I'm a very good archer, yes. That part I am not surprised.
