what makes this version of hogwarts different?
In plain english; we decided that the simplest way to create a 'university of hogwarts' concept was to implement a study plan similar to how college / universities work and attach it to Hogwarts current curriculum.
This means that your post graduate studies can be undertaken at Hogwarts after finishing 7th year. For simplicities sake, we'll be re-using the labelling system already in place in Harry Potter (1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year, and so on). Note that the younger years (11-17 years old) will be in Hogwarts as well. You will never share the same schedule as them, however, for obvious reasons. Assume that all of their classrooms are different, and that they have a different common room from those of the university students.
The general age range for each year level are as follows:
» first year : 18 - 19 years
» second year : 19 - 20 years
» third year : 20 - 21 years
» fourth year : 21 - 22 years
» fifth year : 22 - 23 years
» sixth year : 23 - 24 years
» seventh year : 24 - 25 years
Your character does not have to follow the general age range, so long as their excuse is a gap year or something of the sort.
* We will only be accepting applications from first to fourth year.
We would also like to make it clear that this rp is set in the current year, which means that there will be some changes to the way things work. Most will be similar, and though we will not write ane extensive list of the things we have altered or changed, you are more than welcome to ask the admins.

can i come into this roleplay knowing my patronus?
There is nothing stopping you from coming to the roleplay with your character already knowing their patronus but we do discourage it. While we would like for you to consider your patronus form, we have events in place for your character to learn / reveal their patronus properly for the first time.
Remember, a corporeal patronus is one of the most difficult forms of magic known to witches and wizards; even Hermione Granger, the best witch of her generation, struggled to do it properly.
Update: we recently had a dementor event, where people were able to try their hand at conjuring their patronus. The information is in this announcement.

how do i choose my wand?
Think about your character and who they are when choosing the makeup of your wand; be careful as you only get one! We want you to remember that wands are not a way for you to be edgy and unique if your character story does not call for it; be realistic (as you can be in a world of magic), not everybody will have a phoenix feather core. Use the following resources to determine your wand core, wood and length.
* At this time, we will not be accepting phoenix feather and dragon heartstring core wands.
Because people can technically transfer from other schools, you are not limited to having the three cores that Ollivander works with. For example, you may have veela hair. Make sure to do your research first and know how the cores and woods work.

what is an animal companion?
An animal companion, in all cases, is just a simple house pet that you bring along with you to Hogwarts. They are not the familiars that are known in muggle witch lore, nor are they the same as your corporeal patronus. Familiars are magical, while animal companions are not. Our rules regarding animal companions are a little more lax than what you may find in canon Harry Potter.
Typically a student's companion will be either a cat or an owl, but we will be accepting other animals as long as they make sense. Dogs, frogs, rats, small fish, etc, are all allowed. Do not try to have a unicorn, dragon, dolphin, tiger, cow, etc. as your companion. It does not make sense to keep a large, wild animal in a small dorm, does it?
Use your common sense when being creative.
* Having an animal companion is not required!

how do i get a private room and how do they work?
Probably just like they work in every other roleplay!
Private rooms can be added for a price in the request room (price will depend on whether you are asking for a public or private room) and used for your characters...whims. Since is prohibited in public roleplaying rooms, we imagine that private rooms will be used primarily for that OR if you are looking to roleplay away from prying eyes. Currently there is no limit to private rooms, however, if asking for a 'bedroom' private room, you are limited to one.

can i roleplay in the common rooms?
Common rooms (i.e Gryffindor Tower) and The Great Hall are intended to be IC rooms. While we can't stop you from roleplaying in them, we ask that you be mindful of other peoples conversations; try not to exceed a length longer than a single paragraph so that other peoples posts don't get buried.
We'd prefer that you keep your proper roleplaying to dorms or the other roleplaying rooms.

can we apply for characters using canon family names?
We will not be accepting members of the major families mentioned in the series such as Potter, Black, Malfoy, Weasley, Longbottom, etc, but are open to lesser known names such as Tonks, Bones, Krum and Creevey.
Note: there are a particular group of surnames not mentioned that we would be interested in seeing apply.

can our characters have special magical abilities / gifts?
Yes and no. Because these gifts, such as divination (seer), memory modification, etc. are extremely rare, we will not be allowing multiple people to have each ability. There will be a limit. You will need to double check with the admins to check if your character may have a gift. Also, you have to be mindful; each gift has its own pros and cons. Tread carefully if you're planning to give your character a gift.
