The Great Hall had been transformed into a sort of winter wonderland filled with ice and snow — it's almost hard to believe that this was the same room they had been in just hours before, eating breakfast on the long, wooden tables in the mere hours of the morning whilst silently rejoicing the end of exams. Ice had completely covered up the grey, stone walls, large icicles suspended between each statue that carried clusters of ice instead of the fire that normally warmed the room. The arches too, were frozen in ice, and all banners have been recolored to silver. In between were circular tables that too, have been covered with the same silver fabric, with centerpieces of ice sculptures that represented each house. Beyond were, of course, three large evergreens that smelled how you would think Christmas smelled, covered in the snow that fell over the student's heads, but never quite touched them, as if it disappeared just before it made contact.
McGonagall, dressed in her pine green dress robes, had greeted all of the students with a smile as they piled into the room. Beside her stood the rest of the Hogwarts staff, with Hagrid standing to the side, nearly as giant as two smaller fir trees behind him. On the opposite side are, surprisingly, the Wicked Centaurs, who had been playing soft R&B all the while.
McGonagall steps up, and as always, the room quiets to listen to her speak.
❝ Welcome all, to our annual Yule Ball! You all look wonderful in your attire! It's quite a change from our usual robes, isn't it? Tonight is a night of celebration to not only relieve ourselves of stress, but also to celebrate each other. The Yule Ball is, of course, a chance for us all to — er — let our hair down.
Most of us will be going home for the holidays and will not be seeing each other until the next term starts. So today, in Hogwarts, we celebrate the end of the year with joy and laughter — and, of course, dancing — and enjoy each other's company as if today is Christmas.
So tonight, I would like you all to join me in this celebration, starting off with a dance. ❞
