• Jungkook grew up in an isolated, socially conservative village located deep within the alps found in Yeongnam Province; Haneung Village boasted a tiny population of 183 by the time Jungkook was born, and at its largest, approx 345 people when he was a young boy. The village itself was so isolated that the nearest town was close to a two hour drive away. Though small, Haneung had a rich cultural history that was thanks to a tightknit community that spanned generations. If you were born in Haneung, you would die in Haneung. Everybody knew everybody. The downside to such a small community; there was little to challenge societal expectations and mindsets, which trended towards the extreme end of conservatism in Haneung. A western comparison, that Jungkook frequently uses, would be radical evangical towns found in the United States.
• Because of this lifestyle, Jungkook would grow up to be a very happy, sensible young boy who only ever wanted to make his parents and community proud. He was smart as a whip and funny, even as a child, and loved to participate in community activities such as public vegetable gardens, assisting his neighbours with chores and, of course, devoting himself to the church and Christian faith. Jungkook was the darling of Haneung, and many believed that he'd go far in their town; he'd marry a beautiful young woman right out of high school, they'd have at least five charming children(the first must be a boy, they'd tut to him, it's the only way.) and he'd have a respectable career in the church or his family business in financial advice and accounting.
• For Jungkook, the local parish was his happy place; a safe location where he could sit and pray to God, whispering prayers under his breath about his personal struggles(like why didn't he want to kiss girls like the other boys? was there something wrong with him?) and devoting himself to his faith. He was the favoured choir boy and on his 13th birthday, Jungkook was offered a more official role in the church under his favourite person in the whole world; Father Kim.
• Father Kim was his friend, his honourary father, his guide through lifes struggles. He would trust his mentor enough to divulge his most personal struggles to the man without fear of judgement; Father Kim would listen, silently, with a kind smile whether it was in his office or in the confessional. He always knew it was Jungkook, he'd say with a friendly pat to the head, but it was ok. Father Kim would keep his secrets.
• So what was one little secret from Father Kim? Jungkook was asked one afternoon when helping organise some files in the priests office. Of course he'd nod, promise that he'd keep whatever Father Kim told him private. Jungkook would take it to the grave! Father Kim would laugh at that, and give him that familiar head pat that Jungkook had come to love. Although this time, Father Kim wouldn't let go of his hair.
• He wouldn't remembering leaving Father Kims office that day. Jungkooks memory fuzzy until his mother pointed out the sauce he'd gotten on the corner of his lips from dinner; although when he it off, it was far too salty to be the sweet vinegar served with that nights grilled beef.
• Jungkook enjoyed the adoration he received, almost as much as he enjoyed actually earning it. Being a good boy was so important to young Jungkook, that he would do anything to please others. Even if it meant continuing spending time with Father Kim, doing things that he didn't like, it would be worth it when he'd be called a good boy, a special boy. And Jungkook was the most special boy, right? Right?

• They were caught sometime after Jungkook had turned 15. By now, he'd learned to 'turn off' his brain when Father Kim called him into his office after sermon and typically, the church-goers wouldn't linger and instead congregrate to the local diner for a community breakfast. It was the old Auntie who ran a tiny tteokkbokki stand near the school; she had had questions regarding the mornings service and hadn't thought to knock. She'd find Jungkook on his knees and Father Kim with his robes hoisted around his pot belly.
• She ran, screeching of what she'd seen, and the news spread around the village like wildfire. Jungkook had come to accept that he was gay a few months earlier, believed that he and Father Kim were in love, and they would be together forever. He thought that perhaps having a messenger of God as his one true love, they could change the attitude of their town and people would be happy for them.
• Imagine his surprise when instead of defending their relationship, Father Kim would publically demonise him; damning him as a sodomiser, that he was possessed by the devil, he'd become an unholy temptation that had tricked Father Kim into committing sin.
• And who would believe a silly teenagers tearful plea over a man of God? In the blink of an eye, Jungkook was despised by the people he loved, treated like he was covered in infectious disease. It got so bad that at one point, he considered ending it all just to stop the pain. But before he could, something in him snapped. If Jungkook was going to be treated like the town pariah, then he'd do his ing best to become what they wanted him to be.
• Running away after thoroughly driving his reputation into the ground was the next logical move. Jungkook was homeless at that point, with nothing to keep him tethered to Haneung, so one night, at 17, he up and left; never to be seen again.
• He'd resurface eventually in Seoul after a three year haze of drug-induced stupor, and perhaps the one good thing in his life; gaining employment in the elusive Venus Lounge. The details of this part of his life? ... Well, that's a story for another time.
